"Slow" horrors and no screamers: what Amnesia: Rebirth will surpass the first part

On the occasion of the announcement of Amnesia: Rebirth, held at the beginning of the month, the developers from Frictional Games talked to journalists from various publications. Some of the details are revealed in conversation with Vice, and in an interview PC Gamer, published this week, talked about the game in more detail. In particular, they told how it will differ from Amnesia: The Dark Descent.

Amnesia: Rebirth is directly related to Amnesia: The Dark Descent. The events of the new part take place in 1937, about a hundred years after the finale of the original game. The main character, Parisian Tasi Trianon, went on a business trip, but something disturbed her plans. She woke up unconscious in the middle of the Algerian desert and realized that dangerous creatures were chasing her.

"She's not a soldier, she's not an investigator, she's not an action hero," said creative director Thomas Grip. She is an ordinary person in a terrible situation. And since this is a Frictional Games game, it's unlikely to improve anytime soon."

There are several monsters, and they all behave differently. If they overtake Tasi or the player fails an important objective, there will be "tangible long-term consequences".

The developers have already noted that Amnesia: Rebirth is similar to the previous parts. The player explores locations, solves puzzles and avoids monsters. However, there are significant differences. First of all, the creators try not to use the uncomplicated screamers on which Amnesia: The Dark Descent was built. β€œPlayers have long been accustomed to such simple tricks,” Grip said. β€œWe avoid them and try to surprise the user whenever possible.”

The new Amnesia is not just a horror game, but a game with an emphasis on storytelling that evokes strong emotions (not just fear). The game has also been heavily influenced SOMA. In terms of plot, it is not connected with the previous work of the studio, but in the structure there is something similar. β€œThis project proved that our studio is capable of making games that gradually build horror, and not ones that force you to focus on gameplay only at certain points,” Grip explained. β€œThanks to [SOMA], we have become more free in matters of game design.”

β€œUsually, developers want the core of the gameplay to be a cycle, so that one moment follows another,” he continued. β€” Everything becomes much more complicated when this basis is β€œdistributed” over some longer period. I don't think we could have made Amnesia: Rebirth if we hadn't created SOMA first."

The developers are almost certain that they will not add support for VR devices to the game. This format is very popular among first-person horror games, but according to Grip, in the case of Amnesia: Rebirth, it will be too difficult to do this. Instead, they will try to make the players "feel like Tasi". That is why they first created a full body model of the protagonist.

Amnesia: Rebirth will be released in the fall of 2020 on PC and PlayStation 4. At the same time, the studio is working on another, even more unusual game, the details of which are unknown.
