Axiom Verge Metroidvania is getting a sequel, but for now only on Nintendo Switch

As part of yesterday's broadcast Nintendo Indie World Showcase It became known that a sequel to the popular metroidvania Axiom Verge, released in 2015, is in development.

Axiom Verge Metroidvania is getting a sequel, but for now only on Nintendo Switch

According to game developer Thomas Happ, Axiom Verge 2 has been in production for four years. So far, only the Nintendo Switch version has been confirmed.

According to the project description on the official Nintendo website, the sequel will "reveal the origins of the Axiom Verge universe" while also offering "entirely new characters, abilities, and gameplay."

Π’ USGamer interview Hupp commented on the sequel's setting: "It's hard to explain the timeline without spoilers, but in a way, Axiom Verge 2 is set in the future and Axiom Verge's past, but rather the latter."

In terms of platform choice, Hupp says the Switch is the best place for indie games at the moment: sales of the first Axiom Verge on a Nintendo hybrid console are still "pretty good" compared to versions for other systems.

β€œIt also helps that among all [console] Switch is the weakest. If the game is already running on Switch, then it is guaranteed to run everywhere without any casualties, ”explained Hupp.

The developer cannot yet say when and where else Axiom Verge 2 will be released, but hinted that it will take more than one year: β€œAxiom Verge got to all its platforms in a few years, and everything worked.”

In the original Axiom Verge, players take on the role of scientist Trace, who ends up in a high-tech alien world in an accident.

The project is made in the spirit of the classic Metroid games, where users need to not only fight enemies, but also explore the environment for useful improvements or equipment.
