Microsoft bought ReFirm Labs, which developed the Binwalk firmware analysis utility

Microsoft has acquired ReFirm Labs, which develops Binwalk's open-source toolkit for analysis, reverse engineering, and extraction of firmware images. The reason for the purchase is the desire to improve the security of Internet of Things (IoT) devices. The Binwalk code is written in Python and distributed under the MIT license.

In 2019, ReFirm Labs bought Binwalk from the author of the project and created the Binwalk Enterprise cloud service based on it. Microsoft intends to integrate the analysis and extraction of firmware into the Azure Defender for IoT service to enhance its ability to identify security issues in firmware.
