The next generation of Xbox controllers will once again use batteries. Microsoft explained why it again preferred this solution over the built-in battery. This is due to the desire to give players a choice.

While working to improve the design of the Xbox Controller for Xbox Series X, Microsoft has been actively discussing this aspect of the controller. The gamer community was also worried about this issue, because there was already a precedent - the Xbox Elite Wireless Controller Series 2 uses a built-in battery. However, the designers decided that batteries offered the most flexibility.

“It all comes down to talking to gamers. It's sort of a polarization and there's a big camp that AA really wants," explained Jason Ronald, associate director of program management for Xbox. “So just giving flexibility is a way to please both [sets of] people… You can use a rechargeable battery and it works the same as it does in the Elite.”
