Microsoft postponed the release of Windows Lite - support for Win32 applications is not ready

Windows Lite is without a doubt one of the most anticipated products from Microsoft. But it looks like users will have to be patient and wait some more. How сообщаСтся, work on support for Win32 applications has not progressed as expected in the company. This will prevent Windows Lite from running classic versions of programs, which will drastically limit its scope.

Microsoft postponed the release of Windows Lite - support for Win32 applications is not ready

Note that one of the problems is the launch of Chromium-based Microsoft Edge within the new OS. The original version of Edge, which was developed on the EdgeHTML engine, is deeply integrated into Windows Lite, so now it's time to replace it. And so the company has to do a lot of work so that the browser starts working properly. And this entails the need to support Win32 applications.

As for the new timeline, the source claims that Microsoft plans to start a new phase of internal testing later this year. That is, a public announcement should not be expected before 2020, since the tests will take time. Windows Lite is currently known to be testing on Surface devices, including the Surface Go and Surface Pro 6.

The OS itself will not be released as a separate system. It is positioned as a Full Flash Update, that is, it will be preinstalled on devices by default. In particular, it can become the software basis for a laptop with two screens called Centaurus. Of course, if the project gets the green light. The system will also compete with Chrome OS.

Note that Windows Lite should replace the failed Windows 10 S, and also, in part, Windows RT. Although the "ten" can work on ARM processors, such solutions are still expensive and impractical. Perhaps the "light" version will expand the audience.
