Microsoft has updated the Windows 11 security rules. Administrator privileges are now required to access the Local Storage settings page, a key section for managing disk space, cleaning tools, and system files. While this change may seem minor on paper, it may cause confusion for users who find that a previously accessible section now requires elevated privileges.

Microsoft plans to begin distributing the next security update package on February 10, 2026. Starting with this update, a User Account Control (UAC) prompt will appear when opening the Storage settings page in the Settings app. The company noted that this change is intended to ensure that "only authorized Windows users can access system files." In other words, it adds another layer of security to everyday interactions with Windows 11 devices.
Additionally, the upcoming update package, released as part of the Patch Tuesday program, will bring a number of additional improvements and new features, including the ability to seamlessly transfer certain app sessions from Android smartphones to your computer. This package also includes a major update to Windows MIDI services, including expanded support for MIDI 1.0 and MIDI 2.0, WinMM and WinRT MIDI 1.0 support, and more. The software giant has also improved support for external fingerprint scanners, which can be used for Windows Hello authentication.
All of the above-mentioned new features, along with known bug fixes, are included in the preview version of update KB5074105, which is available for download but is not required for installation. Microsoft published this update package on January 29, and since then, anyone can install it on compatible devices.
