Microsoft improves scrolling in Chromium

Microsoft is actively involved in the Chromium project, on which Edge, Google Chrome and many other browsers are built. For now, Chrome comes with its own smooth scrolling feature, and the Redmond-based company is now works to improve this feature.

In Chromium browsers, scrolling by clicking on the scrollbar can be awkward. Microsoft wants to implement classic smooth scrolling, as implemented in Edge, which will improve the user experience of the browser. From what we know, we are talking about dedicating a separate process for this so that browser freezes or mouse events do not affect scrolling.

We are also talking about the fact that in Chromium there are large delays when the scrollbar is dragged with the mouse. This figure is claimed to be 2-4 times higher in Google's solution than in the old EdgeHTML engine. And this is especially evident on "heavy" sites with an abundance of advertising, graphics, and so on. It is assumed that the transfer of scrolling from the main process to the child will solve this problem.

The Chromium and Canary builds have already accepted some commits on this topic, and the code has been merged into the test branch. In early builds of the browser, the feature can already be activated using the Edge scrollbar scrolling flag, although crashes are not ruled out. Microsoft is also working on other parts of the scrolling improvements, although it's not yet clear when all this will go to release.
