Microsoft, represented by GitHub, acquired npm

GitHub, owned by Microsoft, has announced the acquisition of npm, the popular package manager for javascript applications. The Node Package Manager platform hosts over 1,3 million packages and serves over 12 million developers.

GitHub says npm will remain free for developers and GitHub plans to invest in npm development in terms of performance, reliability, and scalability.

In the future, there are plans to integrate GitHub and npm to further improve security and allow developers to closely track npm packages from their Pull Requests. As for paid npm clients (Pro, Teams, and Enterprise), GitHub plans to allow users to push their private npm packages to GitHub Packages.
