The Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS), according to the RIA Novosti online publication, has decided to complete the Spektr-R space observatory program.
Recall that at the beginning of this year, the Spektr-R apparatus stopped communicating with the Mission Control Center. Attempts to fix the problem, unfortunately, did not bring results.
“The scientific mission of the project has been completed,” said the President of the Russian Academy of Sciences Alexander Sergeev. At the same time, the leadership of the Academy of Sciences was invited to consider the possibility of rewarding the project participants.
The Spektr-R observatory, together with terrestrial radio telescopes, formed a radio interferometer with an extra-large base - the basis of the international Radioastron project. The device was launched in 2011.
Thanks to the Spektr-R telescope, Russian scientists were able to obtain unique results. The collected data will help in the study of galaxies and quasars in the radio range, black holes and neutron stars, the structure of interstellar plasma, etc.
It should be emphasized that the Spektr-R space observatory was able to operate 2,5 times longer than planned. Alas, the specialists failed to bring the device back to life after the failure.
