I recently conducted a survey among professionals who have moved into IT from other industries. Its results are available in
In the process of that survey, I became interested - what is the ratio between colleagues who initially chose a career in IT, who received a special education, and those who received education in professions not related to IT and moved from other industries. It also became interesting to me - what is the ratio between different professions in IT (how many of them) and a number of other questions. I found a good one
However, some interesting questions for me are not disclosed there. Namely, what motivates and helps in the development of an IT specialistβs career, what skills are needed, what level of English the industry representatives have, what technological environment prevails in the work of a modern IT specialist. And I decided to do my research again and I hope for the help of Habr readers.
Like last time, I ask you to take a survey (usually takes 3-5 minutes), and then see the intermediate results under the cut.
I would like to get more than 1000 survey responses so that the data is more reliable.
In the coming days, as data accumulates, I will rewrite the article and refine the results. The final version will be available in a week.
Processing the results of the previous survey, I read a lot of interesting stories, but processing the answers to open-ended questions makes it difficult to obtain statistical data. Therefore, in the new survey, I decided to limit the will of the respondents and offered several typical answers. For most questions, you can give your own answer.
To test the survey, I asked the participants of several IT chats in the Rostov region to go through it and received more than 50 responses. Below I present the data obtained using the βbeta versionβ of the survey. I gradually added questions, so now there are many more questions in the survey than were in the beta questionnaire and are reflected in the article below.
Age of participants
More than half of the participants were in three age groups of 20-25 years old, 26-30 years old and 31-35 years old.
professions
More than half of the participants are programmers. The survey has a section on specializations and I will add the results later.
How do you rate your professionalism?
Another characteristic of the respondents.
Let's see how this compares with work experience in IT.
Working time in IT (experience)
The most popular answer is 10 years or more.
Education
IT is expectedly dominated by people with higher education.
Education profile
Two-thirds of the respondents initially received education related to information technology. Accordingly, one third came from other industries. I remind you that these are data obtained on a small group - a little more than 50 people from the Rostov region.
Knowledge of English
The most popular answers are B1 (35.8%) and B2 (26.4%).
Office or remote
Half of the respondents work in the office every working day. Less than 20% of respondents work completely remotely. I think this is region specific.
Employer business type
What employers do: half are product companies and 30% are outsourcers.
Working hours at the current location
More than half of the answers fall on: less than a year (28%) and from 1 to 2 years (26%).
Time spent at the first job in IT
Less than 20% of the respondents had worked for more than 3 years in their first job.
What programming languages ββdo the respondents speak?
Popularity of programming languages. JavaScript is in the lead. Most likely this is due to the audience in the chats, where I asked to take a survey.
