My research - who works in IT - professions, skills, motivation, career development, technology

I recently conducted a survey among professionals who have moved into IT from other industries. Its results are available in article.

In the process of that survey, I became interested - what is the ratio between colleagues who initially chose a career in IT, who received a special education, and those who received education in professions not related to IT and moved from other industries. It also became interesting to me - what is the ratio between different professions in IT (how many of them) and a number of other questions. I found a good one last year's article from My Circle, which is now Habr Career.

However, some interesting questions for me are not disclosed there. Namely, what motivates and helps in the development of an IT specialist’s career, what skills are needed, what level of English the industry representatives have, what technological environment prevails in the work of a modern IT specialist. And I decided to do my research again and I hope for the help of Habr readers.

Like last time, I ask you to take a survey (usually takes 3-5 minutes), and then see the intermediate results under the cut.

Link to survey

I would like to get more than 1000 survey responses so that the data is more reliable.
In the coming days, as data accumulates, I will rewrite the article and refine the results. The final version will be available in a week.

Processing the results of the previous survey, I read a lot of interesting stories, but processing the answers to open-ended questions makes it difficult to obtain statistical data. Therefore, in the new survey, I decided to limit the will of the respondents and offered several typical answers. For most questions, you can give your own answer.

To test the survey, I asked the participants of several IT chats in the Rostov region to go through it and received more than 50 responses. Below I present the data obtained using the β€œbeta version” of the survey. I gradually added questions, so now there are many more questions in the survey than were in the beta questionnaire and are reflected in the article below.

Age of participants

More than half of the participants were in three age groups of 20-25 years old, 26-30 years old and 31-35 years old.

What programming languages do the respondents speak?

Popularity of programming languages. JavaScript is in the lead. Most likely this is due to the audience in the chats, where I asked to take a survey.
