The Moscow Metro began using a new video surveillance system that can scan citizens' faces a year ago. The complex is designed to increase the level of security: it can be used to detect suspicious behavior of citizens, as well as to detect wanted persons.

The system being implemented now will receive additional functionality. It is reported that new video cameras have appeared in the turnstile zone of the Oktyabrskoye Pole station. It is alleged that several Russian IT companies are participating in the project, but their names are not disclosed.

According to available information, the Moscow Metro has begun testing a complex for biometric identification of citizens. It is assumed that in the future this system can be used to pay for travel by face image. However, it is too early to talk about the implementation of this function.

β€œAt this stage, the cameras are only designed to ensure security, but the decision on the final configuration and architecture of the project, the procedure for its implementation and the timing of work has not yet been made,” RBC quotes statements from representatives of the capital’s subway.

Experts say that in the case of the introduction of payment for travel in the subway based on the image of the face, the complex will have to be connected to the Unified Biometric System (UBS). How reliable this payment method will be is still difficult to say.
