Mozilla has started testing Firefox VPN, an integrated free VPN service in Firefox that allows access to websites not directly but through intermediary servers in different countries, concealing the user's IP address. The VPN will be the first service realized as part of the initiative to integrate additional tools in Firefox for privacy protection and enhanced security. The service is in the early stages of deployment and will be offered as an experiment to a small percentage of randomly selected users in the coming months.
It is noted that Firefox VPN is not related to the paid service Mozilla VPN, which is a full-system VPN, while Firefox VPN is free and limited to a single browser. In its current form, Firefox VPN can be switched on and off for the entire browser using a button in the address bar, but developers promise to add an option for selective activation of the VPN for individual tabs or binding it to specific sites.
