MSI has unveiled its first AMD gaming laptop in years. The novelty is called MSI Alpha 15 and combines an AMD Ryzen 3000-series central processor and a Radeon RX 5500M discrete graphics accelerator. So this is also the first laptop in the world with this video card.
The appearance of this laptop can be considered a big surprise. Even at the beginning of this year in an interview that his company is not ready to experiment with new platforms. Also noted were the close ties of the Chinese company with Intel and NVIDIA, and great support from the former, even despite the shortage of processors. At the same time, MSI noted that it evaluates AMD processors and does not rule out the possibility of laptops based on them.
And now, less than a year later, MSI saw the potential in the solutions of the "red" company and ceased to be afraid of experiments and Intel's reaction. With the new Alpha 15, the Chinese company has launched a new Alpha series, which is likely to feature exclusively products based on the AMD platform. This division will avoid confusion.
MSI Alpha 15 is equipped with a 15,6-inch Full HD (1920 Γ 1080 pixels) display up to 144Hz with support for AMD FreeSync frame synchronization technology. The novelty is based on the Ryzen 7 3750H processor, which has four Zen + cores and eight threads, its base clock speed is 2,3 GHz, and the maximum boost frequency reaches 4,0 GHz.
The Radeon RX 5500M video card, in turn, is built on a RDNA architecture GPU and has 22 Compute Units, that is, 1408 stream processors. The chip frequency in games can reach a very impressive 1645 MHz. Also, the video card has 4 GB of GDDR6 video memory with an effective frequency of 14 GHz. Actually, this novelty differs from the desktop Radeon RX 5500 only by slightly more modest GPU clock speeds.
The Radeon RX 5500M graphics card will deliver up to 30% faster performance than the GeForce GTX 1650, AMD says. It is also noted that the new accelerator is able to provide more than 60 fps in many AAA games (Borderlands 3, The Division 2, Battlefield 5, etc.) and more than 90 fps in popular mainstream games like PUBG and Apex Legends.
The base MSI Alpha 15 gaming laptop with a 120Hz screen, 8GB of RAM and a single color backlit keyboard will sell for $999. In turn, for $ 1099 you can purchase a modification with 16 GB of memory, a 144-Hz screen and a multi-colored keyboard backlight. Sales should start before the end of this month.
