Take-Two Interactive CEO Strauss Zelnick in an interview CNBC commented on the recent announcement of the marketing campaign for the hotly anticipated open-world crime action game GTA VI from Rockstar Games.

As a reminder, the GTA VI advertising campaign is expected to start in summer, and the release is still scheduled for November 19Zelnik is “extremely confident” in the new date, but this is not protection from potential carry.
This time, however, things will be different. At least, according to Zelnick: "We have a promotional campaign planned for this summer, and we're not spending money on marketing until we're close to release."

When asked why GTA VI needed a marketing campaign at all, given the buzz and word of mouth surrounding the game, Zelnick said there's a difference between awareness and energy, and Take-Two "needs to create that energy."
"Expectations are higher than ever. <…> Marketing must be subtle. Create a sense of tangibility. We're not selling hamburgers, but a unique art form," Zelnik emphasized.

GTA VI will take place in the Florida-inspired state of Leonidas, with players assuming the roles of criminals Jason and Lucia. The game promises "the largest and most realistic world" in the series' history.
GTA VI is currently only confirmed for PS5, Xbox Series X, and S. The game is being developed without the use of generative AI — the technology has "nothing to do" with what Rockstar is preparing for the project.
