Slackware 15.0 alpha testing has begun

Nearly five years since the last release, the alpha testing of the Slackware 15.0 distribution has begun. The project has been developing since 1993 and is the oldest of the existing distributions. The distro features a lack of complexity and a simple initialization system in the style of classic BSD systems, which makes Slackware an interesting solution for learning how Unix-like systems work, experimenting, and getting to know Linux. An installation image has been prepared for download, 3.1 GB in size (x86_64), as well as an assembly for running in Live mode.

The new branch is notable for updating the Glibc system library to version 2.33 and using the Linux 5.10 kernel. With a few exceptions, the rest of the packages have been moved from the Current branch and rebuilt with the new Glibc. For example, the rebuild of firefox, thunderbird, and seamonkey has been delayed, as they require additional patches to be compatible with the new Rust compiler included in the distribution.
