FreeBSD 12.2 Beta Started

Prepared first beta release of FreeBSD 12.2. The FreeBSD 12.2-BETA1 release is available for the amd64, i386, powerpc, powerpc64, powerpcspe, sparc64 and armv6, armv7 and aarch64 architectures. Additionally prepared images for virtualization systems (QCOW2, VHD, VMDK, raw) and Amazon EC2 cloud environments. FreeBSD 12.2 release is planned on 27 October.

Release Notes The changelog is currently limited to the empty template, but among the innovations previously slated for inclusion in FreeBSD 12.2 is the use of the W^X (write XOR execute) security technique by default. W^X implies that memory pages cannot be both writable and executable at the same time. The W^X mode will allow the kernel to be loaded using executable memory pages for which writing is disabled (previously, for memory pages with kernel data, execution was already disabled, but without being tied to the possibility of writing). The DRM (Direct Rendering Manager) drivers in the graphics subsystem are synchronized with the Linux 5.4 kernel.

When developing a new branch tested new Git repositorycreated as part of a project to of migration FreeBSD source code from the centralized Subversion source system to the decentralized Git system. Work on the full translation of the history of changes from Subversion to Git has not yet been completed, but from Git already generated first snapshot of FreeBSD 12.2.
