Found a way to turn devices into "sonic weapons"

Research has shown that many modern gadgets can be hacked and used as "sonic weapons". Security Specialist Matt Wixey of PWC foundthat a number of user devices can become improvised weapons or an annoying element. These include laptops, mobile phones, headphones, speakers, and several types of speakers.

In the course of research, it turned out that many modern devices are capable of emitting high-frequency and low-frequency sounds that will be unpleasant for humans. To do this, you need to get programmatic access to the device and, simply put, unscrew the speakers to the maximum. In the case of sufficient power, this can frighten, disorient or even injure the user (more precisely, his hearing organs).

Wixey clarified that some attacks can be implemented using known vulnerabilities in a particular device. Others may require physical access to the device. For example, a specialist carried out one of the attacks using a program that scanned Wi-Fi and Bluetooth local networks for vulnerable devices. After discovery, a hack attempt was made.

At the same time, the expert said that in one case, testing caused damage to the device itself, which stopped working from overload. At the same time, all tests were carried out in a soundproof room, and not a single person was involved in a series of experiments.

The expert has already reached out to manufacturers to help them develop protections that can help if the device is being used to make dangerous or annoying sounds.
