NASA is looking for the inventor of the toilet for the moon, who is offered to make history

The lack of amenities in the house is easily tolerated in the summer summer season, although many are not satisfied even with this state of affairs. But the lack of amenities in the zone of theoretical accessibility turns into a disaster. And even more so for space missions, where you can’t quickly jump out of the room “before the wind”. NASA praises the quality of toilets on the ISS, but wants better for lunar expeditions.

NASA is looking for the inventor of the toilet for the moon, who is offered to make history

Recently, the agency distributed press release, which announced an engineering competition to develop a space toilet both for operation in microgravity (zero gravity) and in the weak gravity of the Moon (about six times weaker than on Earth).

The deadline for submitting applications with drawings is set for August 17, 2020. The engineering design winner will be announced on September 30th. The prize for the first place will be $20, for the second - $000, for the third - $10. In parallel, applications will be accepted from young people under the age of 000 and over. The winner of the youth competition will be announced on October 5000. As prizes, the winners will receive souvenirs with the NASA logo.

The design that won the competition promises to go down in history, since it has every chance of being on the Lunar Flashlight descent vehicle as part of the Artemis program for the return (re-landing) of Americans to the moon. That is why, as the founders of the competition say, it is important that the new space toilet works well both in zero gravity and in lunar gravity.

The main requirements of NASA for development include the weight of the device no more than 15 kg in Earth's gravity, volume no more than 0,12 m3, power consumption no more than 70 W, noise level less than 60 dB (slightly louder than a normal conversation of a pair of interlocutors), convenience for women , and for men, withstanding load up to 132 kg, convenience for users with a height of 147 to 195 cm. Anyone who wants to go down in history? Dare!
