The choice fell on Northrop Grumman Innovation Systems (NGIS), part of the military-industrial corporation Northrop Grumman Corporation, because, as NASA explains, it was the only one of the tenderers able to build a habitation module in time for a lunar mission in 2024.

NASA's procurement documentation released last week revealed that other companies that are also bidding for the Minimal Habitation Module (MHM) contract under NASA's NextSTEP program, including Bigelow Aerospace, Boeing, Lockheed Martin, NanoRacks and Sierra Nevada Corp. will not be able to meet the deadline set by the Donald Trump administration.
