The US National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has selected a contractor to build spacecraft to carry out lunar missions as part of the Artemis program.

The space agency awarded a contract for the production and operation of Orion spacecraft to Lockheed Martin. It is reported that the production of spacecraft for the Orion program, led by NASA's Lyndon Johnson Space Center, will be aimed at repeated use and a permanent presence on the lunar surface.

As part of the contract, NASA ordered three Orion spacecraft from Lockheed to carry out three Artemis missions (third through fifth) for a total of $2,7 billion. In 2022, the agency plans to order three more Orion spacecraft for a total of $1,9 billion for the Artemis lunar missions VI–VIII.
