Desktop Core i7 generation Rocket Lake-S will offer 8 cores and 12 threads. Don't ask how

The next generation of Intel desktop processors will be chips from the Rocket Lake-S family. Previously, there were rumors about the unusual nature of these chips - they will be a 14nm adaptation of the Willow Cove cores, created under the 10nm process technology. But now even stranger information has appeared that the new generation will supposedly feature processors with eight computing cores and twelve threads. And no, we were not mistaken, we are really talking about the β€œnuclear formula” 8/12.

This data was shared by the VideoCardz resource, which received β€œfrom a reliable source” a snapshot of part of a certain internal Intel document describing the positioning of Rocket Lake-S series chips. Among the quite ordinary Core i5 processors with six cores and twelve threads, as well as the Core i9 with eight cores and sixteen threads, there are also unusual Core i7s, which have more threads than cores, not two, but only one and a half times.

What is the reason for this feature, it is difficult to say at the moment. It is possible that an error simply crept into the document. On the other hand, in the current generation of Comet Lake-S processors, Intel has already implemented the ability to disable Hyper-Threading technology for each individual core. So from a technical point of view, an Intel processor with 8 cores and 12 threads is quite possible.

It is worth recalling that in the Coffee Lake Refresh generation, the Core i9 and Core i7 processors also had 8 cores, but in the Core i7 series, Hyper-Threading technology was completely disabled. However, for future Rocket Lake-S processors, this differentiation option is not suitable due to the strengthening of the Core i5 series, where Hyper-Threading technology will be supported. That is why the appearance of 12-thread and 8-core processors in the Core i7 series does not look so unexpected.

Another interesting part of this leak is that in the lower price segment, instead of Rocket Lake-S, updated Comet Lake-S, also known as Comet Lake-S Refresh, will be offered. Apparently, Intel will simply raise the clock speeds of existing chips and add them to the new generation. In addition, this indirectly indicates that Rocket Lake-S will indeed be noticeably different from current Intel processors architecturally, which after five years of Skylake microarchitecture cannot but rejoice.
