Not smart enough: Google will shut down its automatic photo printing service

Google is phasing out a trial program for a service that sent users monthly algorithmically selected printed photos from the Google Photos library. Subscription service was launched in the US in February and provided a monthly fee of $7,99, sending 30 10 × 10 prints every 15 days in return.

The service allowed users to choose which topics the AI should prioritize when selecting pictures to print. Options could include “people and pets,” “landscapes,” and “a little bit of everything.” Users could edit selections before photos were sent to print.

Now, the search giant has sent a notice to subscribers that the service will not be available after June 30:

“Thank you for your invaluable feedback over the past few months. You have provided us with a lot of useful information on how we can develop this feature, which we hope to make available more widely. Please look forward to future updates on this. While we are winding down the trial program, we hope you have experienced some joy in the prints you received during this trial."

It's unclear when Google will launch the service again or if there are plans outside the US. Perhaps the idea is simply shelved and will not be revived in the foreseeable future.
