Failed Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic III would have told about the powerful Sith Lords

As soon as work on Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II - The Sith Lords was completed, Obsidian Entertainment was ready to make the third game of the acclaimed RPG series. Unfortunately, it did not happen. Screenwriter Chris Avellone spoke about the then plans at the Reboot Develop event.

Failed Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic III would have told about the powerful Sith Lords

“After finishing development on the second game, we were trying to rebuild our lives,” Avellone recalled. — We started working on the idea of the third part, because we always conceived a trilogy. Even when we were working on the second game, we foreshadowed what Darth Revan was doing in the second game, and he didn't always just ruthlessly and mindlessly blow things up. In fact, he had a larger plan, there were all sorts of manipulations and threats.

In the never-released Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic III, the player had to track down Darth Revan, and then engage in battle with the truly ancient Sith Lords, who are much more terrible than the already known Darts. These supporters of the dark side had unimaginable power - they ruled not just a star system, but an entire galaxy. However, players could delve into their psychology, learn their personalities and backgrounds, and understand the character even from simple interaction with the characters.

“So in the places where you travel, you might see how they left their imprint on that world, or that star system, or some cluster of moons. You see how terrible it is. Part of this environment could tell about it. It would be a wonderful, epic way to end the trilogy. The old republic is out there somewhere. We just didn't have the opportunity to do it," Chris said.

These ancient Sith Lords would be very mysterious individuals, but not as secretive as Snoke in the new films. Avellone believes that there are too many secrets around the latter, although with the villains one could come up with interesting and varied origin stories. Regarding the third part of Star Wars: The Knights of the Old Republic, the writer is not sure why the game never took place, but suggests that this may be due to the internal politics of LucasArts.

"I think one of the reasons - and I'm just thinking out loud - is that LucasArts had an internal team at the time that wanted to make a game," Avellone said. “Obviously they would be preferred. I think that was one of the factors. Another factor: I think that… BioWare tried [to take on the game] several times. She kept trying to push the idea, to which we were like, "Hey, we'll be doing the third game." But things didn't go anywhere."

There may not have been more single-player Star Wars RPGs since then, but Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, an action game from the creators of the Titanfall series, is in development and will go on sale. November 15 this year for PC, Xbox One and PlayStation 4.
