Netmarketshare: Windows 10 market share shrinks, Edge continues to grow

The Netmarketshare resource has published a report on the results of another study, in which the market share of popular operating systems and browsers was determined in April 2020. The given data suggests that the share of Windows 10 decreased in the reporting period, but the Edge browser continues to gain popularity.

The report says that in April, the share of distribution of Windows 10 on a global scale was 56,08%, while in March it was equal to 57,34%. This decline is not related to the return to popularity of Windows 7, since the presence of this operating system also decreased: from 26,3% in March to 25,59% in April.

At the same time, there is an increased popularity of Linux (an increase in the level of distribution from 1,36% to 2,87%) and macOS 10.x, whose share increased from 8,94% in March to 9,75% in April. The Windows 8.1 operating system runs on 3,28% of devices, while 7% of users interact with Windows 25,59.

As for the market share of browsers, everything is relatively static in this segment. During the reporting period, the level of distribution of Google Chrome rose to 69,18%, while in March this figure was 68,5%. It is worth noting a slight increase in the share of Microsoft Edge: from 7,59% in March to 7,76% in April. Mozilla Firefox added even less, the level of distribution of which reached 7,25% in the reporting period.

It is worth noting that the new Microsoft Edge, built on Chromium, continues to gradually become more and more popular. The Chrome browser is also on the rise and is currently one step away from a record high of 70% market share.
