Film company New Line Cinema will shoot a film based on the classic game Space Invaders. According to Deadline, the script for the film will be written by Greg Russo. The film's release date has yet to be revealed.
Russo is best known for writing the Mortal Kombat reboot, which will begin filming in late 2019. He also writes scripts for Netflix's Death Note and the Fenix Studios adaptation of Saints Row.
It is assumed that the key plot of the movie will be the invasion of aliens. It was with this idea that the game was released. The film will be produced by Akiva Goldsman (Hancock, I Am Legend). It won an Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay for A Beautiful Mind. He will be paired with Tory Tunnell (Robin Hood: The Beginning).
This is not the first such rumor about Space Invaders. Warner Bros. film rights back in 2014. The company also planned to work on it with Goldsman and Tunnell, but then the shooting never came to fruition.
Space Invaders was released in 1978 on arcade machines. The player controlled a laser gun, and the main task was to fight off aliens approaching from above.
