Russo is best known for writing the Mortal Kombat reboot, which will begin filming in late 2019. He also writes scripts for Netflix's Death Note and the Fenix Studios adaptation of Saints Row.

It is assumed that the key plot of the movie will be the invasion of aliens. It was with this idea that the game was released. The film will be produced by Akiva Goldsman (Hancock, I Am Legend). It won an Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay for A Beautiful Mind. He will be paired with Tory Tunnell (Robin Hood: The Beginning).

This is not the first such rumor about Space Invaders. Warner Bros. has acquired film rights back in 2014. The company also planned to work on it with Goldsman and Tunnell, but then the shooting never came to fruition.

Space Invaders was released in 1978 on arcade machines. The player controlled a laser gun, and the main task was to fight off aliens approaching from above. When hitting one, the movement speed of the others increased. It has since been re-released on a variety of popular platforms including the Nintendo 64, GameBoy, NES, PlayStation, and more.
