Windows 10 Insider Preview Build Gets UI Improvements for 2-in-1 Devices

Since the release of Windows 10 in 2015, Microsoft has been constantly improving it to improve the user experience of tablet PCs. The company has done a great job in this direction. This is especially noticeable when comparing Windows 10 and previous versions of the OS, but there is still work to be done.

The new Windows 10 Insider Preview Build 19592 for Fast Ring - users who get the latest test builds of the operating system, while at the risk of getting unstable software - has acquired a set of features that Microsoft calls "Tablet Posture" (tablet posture). They are primarily focused on 2-in-1 devices that are becoming increasingly popular in the market as alternatives to traditional laptops. Tablet Posture features were tested by Microsoft in earlier Insider Preview builds, but for unknown reasons, they were later abandoned.

Microsoft states that the new functionality is completely unrelated to the existing tablet mode and is designed to work specifically on 2-in-1 devices:

  • icons on the taskbar are spaced wider;
  • instead of the search bar, the search icon is displayed on the taskbar;
  • the on-screen keyboard is automatically displayed when you click on the text input field;
  • the distance between the elements in the explorer has become larger, so that it is more convenient to interact with them by touching.

Microsoft has clarified that these improvements will not be made available to all participants in the testing program at the same time, but will instead be rolled out in waves.

It seems that with the introduction of Tablet Posture, Microsoft wants to provide 2-in-1 device users with the main benefits of a full-fledged standard interface without having to switch to extended tablet mode. This looks like a reasonable compromise.
