New Article: Computer of the Month - June 2019

As expected, the Reds at Computex 2019 revealed the main characteristics of AMD Ryzen 3000 processorsbased on the Zen 2 microarchitecture. At the end of May, AMD introduced solutions for the middle and upper price ranges, and budget models, most likely, will not see the light until autumn. Perhaps we were most intrigued by the 12-core Ryzen 9 3900X, which at $500 should "slam" the Core i9-9900K as the main competitor among the mainstream AM4 and LGA1151-v2 platforms. Well, it remains to wait until July 7, when the new items go on sale, and a large number of detailed reviews appear on the Web.

"Computer of the Month" is a column that is exclusively advisory in nature, and all statements in the articles are supported by evidence in the form of reviews, various tests, personal experience and confirmed news. And now I boldly declare: if you plan to assemble a new system unit in the near future, then wait at least until July 7th. Reviews will come out - and it will finally become clear what the new items are. This recommendation is not relevant, perhaps, only for starter and base builds, since budget Ryzen chips will not go on sale soon. And yet in life there are situations when there is no way to wait a month or two, and a new computer is needed right now. In such realities, you can safely focus on the tables presented in this material.

New Article: Computer of the Month - June 2019

The next issue of "Computer of the Month" is traditionally released with the support of the computer store "Regard". On the site you can always arrange delivery to any point of our country and pay for the order online. Details can be read at this page. "Regard" among users is famous for quite adequate prices for computer components and a large selection of products. In addition, the store has free assembly service: you make a configuration - employees of the company collect it.

«Regard” is a partner of the rubric, so in the “Computer of the Month” we focus on products that are sold in this particular store. Any assembly displayed in this series of articles is just a guideline. Links in the "Computer of the Month" lead to the corresponding categories of goods in the store. In addition, the tables show the current prices at the time of writing, rounded up to a multiple of 500 rubles. Naturally, during the life cycle of the material (one month from the date of publication), the cost of certain goods can either increase or decrease. Unfortunately, I cannot correct the tables in the article every day.

For beginners who still can’t decide on their own to “make” a PC for themselves, we have detailed step by step guide for assembling the system unit. It turns out that inComputer of the month» I tell you what to assemble a computer from, and in the manual - how to do it.

#Starter Assembly

"Entrance ticket" to the world of modern PC games. The system will allow you to play all AAA projects in Full HD resolution, mainly at high graphics quality settings, but sometimes you will have to set medium ones. Such systems do not have a serious margin of safety (for the next 2-3 years), are replete with compromises, need to be upgraded, but also cost less than other configurations.

Total AMD - 40 rubles. Intel - 000 rubles.

As I said, AMD's new products will not seep into the starting and basic builds for a long time. Even the cheapest 6-core - Ryzen 5 3600 - is priced "red" at $ 200 (13 rubles at the time of writing). I am sure that in July and, possibly, August, this chip will not be able to be bought at such or a similar price. But I will keep a close eye on the situation.

Nevertheless, AMD's launch build has changed markedly - and for the better. I advise you to purchase a Ryzen 3 2300 chip instead of the Ryzen 5 1400X. In June, the price difference between these chips is only 500 rubles. On the side of the Ryzen 3 2300X, there is a higher frequency, on the side of the Ryzen 5 1400, there is support for SMT technology and, as a result, the presence of 8 threads. In my opinion, the life cycle of the second "stone" is noticeably longer, since in the same games additional threads will obviously not be superfluous. And the difference in frequency, if desired, can always be leveled by overclocking. Let me remind you that all processors of the Ryzen family are equipped with a free multiplier. Even with a Gigabyte GA-AB350M-DS3H V2-class board, it is quite possible to get a stable 3,8 GHz for all four cores, the main thing is not to overestimate the CPU voltage too much.

I’ll even say more - Ryzen 5 1500X and Ryzen 5 1600 would look good in the starting assembly, but you will have to pay 9 and 000 rubles for them, respectively.

Once I was criticized for refusing to save 500 rubles and put a board based on the A320 chipset in the starter assembly. Well, it turns out budget platforms based on the A320 chipset, in the understanding of AMD, should not receive compatibility with the new Ryzen 3000 processors. However, as we know, there are exceptions to this rule, and some manufacturers (for example, ASUS) add compatibility with Matisse chips in their entry-level products privately. Gigabyte GA-AB350M-DS3H V2, which has been offered for a month in the launch assembly, has received support for Ryzen 3000 so far, and there is no chance that it will. In order to eventually install, for example, Ryzen 5 1400 instead of Ryzen 5 3600 without replacing the motherboard, it is better to take a board at least based on the B450 chipset. Therefore, I put a more expensive device in the starting assembly. If you do not plan any upgrade, you can save 1-000 rubles and take a more affordable board based on the B1 chipset.

New Article: Computer of the Month - June 2019

Changed in June and the starting assembly of Intel. Over the past month, the quad-core Core i500-3 has risen in price by 8100 rubles, but the Core i3-9100F model has appeared on sale. I remind you that the letter "F" in the name of Intel chips means that the integrated video core is disabled in these devices. On the one hand, yes, we are dealing with rejection. On the other hand, here is a paradox! - the starting assembly has only become faster, because the Core i3-9100F supports the Turbo Boost function, so its frequency can increase up to 4,2 GHz depending on the load.

Take into account the only point. In order for the motherboard to detect the Core i3-9100F, you need to update its BIOS. With a high degree of probability, Regard will sell you a device with an old firmware version. Immediately after purchase, contact the store's warranty department and ask for a BIOS update. And use your computer to your health.

By the way, on our website detailed review of Core i3-9350KF. Our testing shows that four cores in modern games are still functional, and therefore the conclusion suggests itself: the Core i3-9100F looks good paired with the Radeon RX 570 8 GB.

And now about the main thing. Starting this month, the launch build uses a dual-channel set of 16 GB of RAM. We have repeatedly noted a pleasant trend - RAM and SSD are noticeably cheaper. In May, an article was published on our website “How much video memory do modern games need". I will give a simple example from it: in Full HD resolution, when using the Radeon RX 570 8 GB video card in the stand, in six out of ten AAA games, the consumption of RAM exceeded 8 GB. Going to 16 GB actually looks justified for a long time, and some readers have noted this point in the comments, more than once. If you remember, in 2017 an article was published “How much RAM do you need for games: 8 or 16 GB". Well, recent tests have clearly shown that it is relevant even in 2019. In addition, in almost every issue I repeat: do not delay with an upgrade of RAM - a modern gaming PC you need to have 16 GB of system memory.

For an Intel system, DDR4-2400 modules are recommended, as a motherboard based on the H310 chipset will not allow you to use faster RAM. For the AM4 platform, I recommend the G.Skill kit, which has an XMP profile. It costs about 7 rubles, but you can save money by taking, for example, Samsung DDR000-4 modules (2666 rubles for 3 GB), which are also guaranteed to overclock to 000 MHz. Only in the case of G.Skill will it be enough to press one button in the BIOS.

By the way, if you install a 570 GB Radeon RX 4 into the system, then the consumption of RAM under the same conditions exceeds 8 GB in seven cases out of ten. As you can see, the use of the “video card with 8 GB VRAM + 16 GB RAM” bundle allows even a very budget system to have a tangible, let's say, margin of safety.

In particular, therefore, the launch assembly does not use the Radeon RX 570 4 GB, which costs 11-12 thousand rubles in June. I think that saving 1 rubles is not worth it.

And on our website there was a review of the video card GeForce GTX 1650. Our tests have shownthat the same Radeon RX 570 4 GB is faster on average by 15%. At the same time, at the time of writing, the cost of various versions of the GeForce GTX 1650 varied in the range from 12 to 16 thousand rubles. Obviously, in order for this model to become at least somewhat successful among gamers, it needs to be decently “throw off” in price.

As always, in the comments to the "Computer of the Month" critics of the launch assembly are divided into two groups. The first category of readers suggests making the initial assembly even cheaper, while the second, on the contrary, believes that it would be nice to invest in other (faster and, as a result, more expensive) components. Please, please do as you see fit. For example, instead of Ryzen 5 1400, you can take Ryzen 3 1200 (in BOX configuration) - the savings will be 2 rubles. Instead of the Radeon RX 500 570 GB, we will take the 8 GB version of this video card and save another 4 rubles. Finally, buying only 1 GB of RAM will help save about 000 rubles. As you can see, we can significantly reduce the cost of the starting build, but in this case, you will almost always have to play using medium graphics quality settings, or even lower.

If, on the contrary, you have additional money, then I sincerely believe that instead of the Ryzen 5 1400, you should take the Ryzen 5 1600. Naturally, it would be nice to overclock the 6-core to 3,8 GHz. Testing showsthat such overclocking gives a 10% increase in FPS in games.

With the Intel system, you can do the following: if there is no money, then instead of the Core i3-9100F we take the Pentium Gold G5400 BOX (5 rubles) and 000 GB of RAM (8 rubles). If there are additional funds, then the cheapest 3-core Core i000-6F will have to pay 5 rubles. As you can see, the transition from four cores to six in the case of the LGA9400-v12 platform is much more expensive. There is nothing good in this, of course.

#Basic Assembly

With such a PC, you can safely play the next couple of years in all modern games in Full HD resolution at high and maximum graphics quality settings.

Basic Assembly
Processor AMD Ryzen 5 2600 6 Cores 12 Threads 3,4 (3,9) GHz 8+8MB L3 AM4 OEM 10 500 rub.

Total AMD - 51 rubles. Intel - 000 rubles.

The six-core Ryzen 5 1600 for 8 rubles really looks very interesting. If you plan to overclock this chip, then you can safely take it into the base assembly. I repeat, the rule “if I overclock the processor, I will take the lowest chip in the series with the desired number of cores” is true for all models: Ryzen 500, Ryzen 3 and Ryzen 5. However, a minority of users are engaged in overclocking, so the Ryzen 7 5 model is used in the base assembly And here let's dwell in more detail.

The first five Ryzen 3000 models will go on sale in July. The six-core Ryzen 5 3600 will sell in the US for $200 before tax. I am sure that in Russia in the first month or two there will be a slight shortage of these chips, and computer stores will not hesitate to sell new items at inflated prices. Therefore, it is unlikely that you will be able to buy a Ryzen 5 3600 for at least 13 rubles in July.

Meanwhile, AMD's new products could be a very attractive purchase this year. The $ 200 Ryzen 5 3600 received 32 MB of L3,6 cache, and its frequency varies in the range of 4,2-200 GHz depending on the type of load - this is already 5 MHz more than the Ryzen 2600 2. At the same time, at the presentation AMD has paid a lot of attention to the gaming performance of the new chips. It seems that the Zen XNUMX architecture will be comparable to the Coffee Lake microarchitecture in gaming scenarios, and in other resource-intensive applications it will simply “crush” with threads if we compare the “red” processors with Intel chips in the same price category.

In particular, there was information that Ryzen 5 3600 scores 26000-27000 on Geekbench. And this means that the multi-threaded performance of AMD's new junior six-core is higher than that of the Core i7-8700K. Only here I recommend the 6-core Coffee Lake in the maximum assembly, and not in the base one. Hurry up July 7th...

Please note that if boards on the B2000 chipset are used in the assembly along with the Ryzen 350 series processors, then even in May 2019, you can be sold a motherboard with an old BIOS version in the store. As a result, the device simply will not detect a new chip. You can update the BIOS version yourself, armed with a first generation Ryzen processor, or ask for it in the warranty department of the store where the board was purchased.

New Article: Computer of the Month - June 2019

As for the base assembly of Intel, it does without changes. Over the past month, the Core i5-8500 model has fallen slightly in price (15 rubles), but in fact the Core i500-5F, recommended in June, runs at the same frequency of 9400 GHz when all six cores are loaded. But a chip without a video core costs 3,9 rubles less.

Still, the readers are right: you need to add the Radeon RX 1660 to the base assembly for the GeForce GTX 590. In Regard, the cost of the first starts at 17 rubles and ends at 000 rubles, while the Radeon RX 20 can be bought for 500-590 rubles. Our tests show that in Full HD resolution in GeForce GTX 1660 games 13% ahead of the GeForce GTX 1060 6 GB and 8% ahead of the Radeon RX 590, but 17% behind the GeForce GTX 1070 and GeForce GTX 1660 Ti. At the same time, the GeForce GTX 1660 Ti can be bought for 20-000 rubles. Whether it is worth paying extra 27 rubles (~000%) for a 4% increase in games is, of course, up to you, dear readers. I believe that the GeForce GTX 000 or Radeon RX 24 can be installed in the base assembly, and if desired, win back 17-1660% using overclocking.

On the one hand, the GeForce GTX 1660 costs the same, but it turns out (if we compare the average FPS) consistently faster than the Radeon RX 590. On the other hand, the Radeon RX 590 has 2 GB more video memory. In the article "How much video memory do modern games needIt is clearly shown that such a difference in the volume of VRAM is already affecting now, and in the future it may become quite critical. It turns out that the Radeon RX 590 is slower than the GeForce GTX 1660, but it will last longer in the distance. I will go over this topic in more detail when I talk about the optimal assembly of the “Computer of the Month”. Now I recommend choosing a video card based on the list of your favorite games. If the GeForce is better in them, then we take the GeForce GTX 1660. And vice versa.

As always, in the case of Low- and Middle-segment adapters, I recommend not spending money on fancy versions and taking something simpler. Remember we spent comparative testing of 9 different modifications of the GeForce GTX 1060? The TDP level of the GP106 processor is 120W. Testing has shown that even simple coolers quite effectively cool such a chip, as well as the entire external piping. I'm sure the budget versions of the GeForce GTX 1660 (Ti) will also work well, because the TDP of the TU116 processor is also 120 watts.

#Optimal Assembly

So, in the optimal assembly, the table shows three video cards at once. With a budget of Rs. As a result, if we compare 26D accelerators in terms of average FPS in games, the GeForce RTX 000 is ahead of the GeForce GTX 2060 Ti, and after overclocking it is also compared with the GeForce GTX 1070. But these 56 GB of video memory ...

Let's reopen the articleHow much video memory do modern games need". Look at the average frame rate in games running on the bench with the GeForce RTX 2060 - it exceeded 60 frames per second everywhere. However, take a look at the minimum FPS - in five games out of ten, there are drawdowns associated with filling the VRAM of the video card. And this is when using a very fast set of RAM in the test bench.

Is it a lot or a little? Here, dear readers, you must decide for yourself. In my opinion, this is enough to say: 6 GB of video memory for AAA games in Full HD resolution is not enough right now. It would be a shame for me to buy a video card for 25-30 thousand rubles - and as a result, reduce the quality of the graphics, although everything is in order with the average FPS. This behavior can be forgiven for the GeForce GTX 1060 6 GB, which was released almost three years ago, and the GeForce GTX 1660 - because it costs noticeably less than the GeForce RTX 2060.

On the other hand, the GeForce RTX 2060 has an undeniable plus - support for ray tracing at the hardware level. In the same games that support DXR, the situation comes to the comical: junior RTX adapter outperforms GeForce GTX 1080 Ti - the former flagship of the GeForce-series. Only here, the use of ray tracing seriously increases the amount of VRAM that the game consumes. Without DXR, the same GeForce RTX 2060, for example, works well in Battlefield V. But it's worth turning on the "rays" ...

Testing showsthat even when using the DXR modes "Low" and "Medium", VRAM consumption exceeds 6 GB, as evidenced by the growth in consumption, for example, of the RAM of the test bench. And it seems that the average FPS is more or less comfortable (for a single-player campaign - so for sure, but in multiplayer it is unlikely that anyone will twist the graphics to the maximum), but the constant slowdown of the picture frankly interferes with the game. A similar situation is observed in SotTR: there is not enough video memory for the GeForce RTX 2060 - and that's it. But in Metro Exodus, the GPU is slowly starting to “choke”.

So it turns out that the GeForce RTX 2060, as a video card with hardware support for ray tracing, initially looks ... rather weak. My colleague Valery Kosikhin came to the same conclusion when he wrote the article “GeForce GTX vs. GeForce RTX in the games of the future". That is why the optimal assembly contains not only the GeForce RTX 2060, but also the GeForce GTX 1070, as well as the Radeon RX Vega 56 - worthy alternatives to the Turing adapter with more memory, albeit with a slightly lower average FPS in games.

New Article: Computer of the Month - June 2019

Intel's optimal build also uses the Core i5-9400F. The Core i5-8500 model, as I already noted, costs 15 rubles, and for the Core i500-5, Regard asks 8600 thousand rubles - a little expensive even for an optimal assembly. It makes no sense to buy these chips at such prices.

Therefore, we once again act differently: in addition to the Core i5, we will take a board based on the Z370 Express or Z390 Express chipset. Yes, we have a processor that cannot be overclocked. However, we can speed it up with the help of fast RAM. Our tests showthat the "Core i5-8400 + DDR4-3200" bundle is not inferior to the "Core i5-8500 + DDR4-2666" tandem in terms of performance. Consequently, the Core i5-9400F will also become, let's say, one step higher. In addition, such a board will eventually allow replacing the younger 6-core with something more interesting and productive.

With the choice of processor for the AM4 platform in June, everything is quite simple, although I propose to look at the Ryzen 5 3600 and Ryzen 5 3600X models right now. In the meantime, I'm betting on the Ryzen 5 2600X chip. The beauty of this processor is that it ... does not make sense to overclock. In games, its frequency (with a good cooler) varies in the range from 4,1 to 4,3 GHz. It remains only to choose a memory kit for this chip, which will be guaranteed to work at a high frequency.

A less banal option would be to buy the younger 8-core Ryzen 7 1700 (16 rubles). I recommend overclocking this processor to at least 000 GHz - in this mode of operation, the system will show about the same level of performance in games, but in resource-intensive tasks, the assembly with Ryzen 7 will be noticeably faster. More modern Ryzen 5 2600X without overclocking bypasses Ryzen 7 1700 because of the decent clock speed difference.
