New Article: ASUS TUF Gaming FX505DY Laptop Review: AMD Strikes Back

If you go to the "Laptops and PCs”, you will see that on our site there are reviews of mainly gaming laptops with Intel and NVIDIA components. Of course, we could not ignore such solutions as ASUS ROG Strix GL702ZC (first AMD Ryzen laptop) and Acer Predator Helios 500 PH517-61 (a system with Radeon RX Vega 56 graphics), but the appearance of these mobile computers was rather a pleasant exception to the rule. But everything changes this year!

Finally, gaming laptops based on Ryzen mobile chips and Radeon RX graphics have reached store shelves. One of the first signs is the ASUS TUF Gaming FX505DY model, which uses a 4-core Ryzen 5 3550H and a 4-gigabyte version of the Radeon RX 560X. It is very interesting to compare this device with other gaming systems that have an Intel processor and a mobile GeForce GTX 1050. Which is what we will do now.

As far as I understand, not the most pumped modification of the TUF laptop came to our office: it has only 8 GB of RAM installed, but it uses a 512 GB solid-state drive. Together with pre-installed Windows 10 Home, this laptop is asking for 60 rubles. Interestingly, a model with a bundle of "000 GB SSD + 256 TB HDD", but without a preinstalled operating system, costs an average of 1 rubles. At the time of this writing, I did not find other modifications of the ASUS TUF Gaming FX55DY in Russian retail.

All TUF series laptops based on the AMD platform are equipped with the Realtek 8821CE wireless module, which supports IEEE 802.11b/g/n/ac standards at 2,4 and 5 GHz and Bluetooth 4.2.

ASUS TUF FX505DY came with an external power supply with a power of 120 W and a weight of about 500 g.

Externally, the model in question is very similar to the laptop tested last year. ASUS FX570UD. It's not just that laptops have similar markings in the title. The red accents and notches on the lid should definitely appeal to youngsters and AMD fans alike. This design was called Red matter (an idiom that translates as "red matter"). On sale you can also find a model called "Golden Steel".

The body of the laptop is entirely made of plastic, which tries its best to resemble brushed aluminum. I have no complaints about the quality of the material and the assembly, although the drawback inherent in the FX570UD model remains: the laptop lid β€œplays” when you press it hard.

The lid, by the way, opens up to about 135 degrees, which means that it is convenient to use the device, even if you place it on your lap. The hinges used in the design are quite tight, they clearly position the screen and prevent it from hanging out during gaming sessions. At the same time, you can easily open the laptop lid with one hand.

However, ASUS TUF Gaming FX505DY still looks more elegant than FX570UD. This is largely achieved through thin frames, which the Taiwanese company's marketers call NanoEdge. On the left and right, their thickness is only 6,5 mm. Above and below, however, - noticeably more.

Otherwise, if we continue the topic of size, the TUF Gaming FX505DY received fairly typical characteristics: its thickness is slightly less than 27 mm, and its weight is 2,2 kg without an external power supply.

The main interfaces are located on the TUF Gaming FX505DY on the left side. Here you will find a port for connecting a power supply, an RJ-45 from a Realtek gigabit controller, an HDMI output, one USB 2.0, two USB 3.1 Gen1 (all three serial ports are A-type) and a 3,5 mm jack for connecting headphones. On the right side of the laptop there is only a Kensington lock slot. In principle, such a composition of connectors is quite enough to comfortably play your favorite games, although in any case this topic can be classified as a debatable one.

The keyboard in the TUF Gaming FX505DY is identical to the one used in the previously tested model ASUS ROG Strix SCAR II (GL504GS). She received the name HyperStrike. Comparing the keyboards, you can see that they have the same button sizes, as well as external elements such as edging and a dedicated WASD block. In both cases, a scissor mechanism, which is quite standard for gaming devices, is used; to operate the switch, it is necessary to apply a strictly defined force - 62 grams. The key travel is 1,8 mm. The manufacturer claims that the keyboard accepts any number of simultaneous keystrokes, and the resource of each key is 20 million keystrokes. The entire keyboard is equipped with a three-level red backlight (but not RGB, as is the case with the ROG Strix SCAR II).

There are no serious complaints about the keyboard layout. So, TUF Gaming FX505DY has large Ctrl and Shift, which are often used in shooters. Personally, I would like to have a large Enter in the arsenal, but you can even get used to the existing button in just a couple of days. It is inconvenient to use only the arrow keys - they are traditionally very small in ASUS laptops.

The power button is located where it should be - away from the rest of the keys. Additional buttons, with which, for example, the volume of the speakers and microphone could be adjusted, are not provided.

The device's webcam runs at 720p at 30Hz. As you understand, the image quality of such a webcam is very lame. And if a muddy and noisy picture is enough for Skype calls, then, for example, for streaming on Twitch and YouTube sites, it’s definitely not.

⇑#Internal arrangement and upgrade options

The laptop is quite easy to disassemble: unscrew 10 screws and remove the plastic bottom.

The cooling system consists of two fans and two heat pipes, and only one of them is reserved for the central processor. Let me remind you that the TDP level of the Ryzen 5 3550H is 35W.

The test version of TUF Gaming FX505DY is equipped with 8 GB of DDR4-2400 RAM. The RAM is implemented as a single SK Hynix module, the second SO-DIMM slot is free. Ryzen mobile chips support up to 32GB of RAM.

The main and only drive is the Kingston RBUSNS81554P3512GJ NVMe model with a capacity of 512 GB. There is a slot for a 2,5-inch storage device, but in the case of our version of the TUF Gaming FX505DY, it is empty.
