New article: Google Pixel 4 Smartphone Review: An iPhone for Android Lovers
About the fourth "pixel" everything became known more or less in advance - even more than in the case of any other smartphone: official images of Google itself with the design of the gadget were added to the leaks of insiders. But even knowledge of the design and all the technical characteristics did not reduce the degree of interest - after all, the most important thing in smartphones under Google's own brand was and lies in how they work.
Differences from Google Pixel 3, with the exception of the design and the second camera that finally appeared, for the sake of which it was necessary to fence a garden with a square platform in the manner of the new iPhones, not so much. Yes, of course, they refreshed the hardware platform, added some memory, because of the reduced “chin” they moved the lower speaker from the front plane to the lower edge ... Important changes in the “iron” plan include the complete disappearance of the fingerprint scanner - it is replaced by a face recognition system using a depth sensor - and a new motion sensor, due to which the smartphone can recognize gestures. This is a “flickering” function that manufacturers either add to their smartphones (remember the Samsung Galaxy S4), then they forget for a while, then they start installing it all over again - first Huawei Mate 30 Pro, now here's the Google Pixel 4. For the sake of this sensor, I had to chop off a noticeable part of the front surface in the upper part of the screen - but I managed to get away from the ugly "monobrow", the largest of all.
Of course, there are two "pixels" again - small and large, with the suffix XL. This time they differ only in the size of the display (5,7 inches for a regular one, 6,3 inches for an XL) and battery capacity. Even such small differences as the dual selfie camera on the "big" did not appear this time. Two identical smartphones - for those who like more and less.
Google Pixel smartphones have never been particularly beautiful. Characteristic style - yes; recognition, originality, specificity - too. But not beauty. The apogee was the giant “mono-brow” on the Google Pixel 3. It seems that in the pursuit of fashion, Google designers have lost a bit of the coast and taken it too literally. The Pixel 4 has experienced a rollback, and again a very peculiar one.
Instead of a cutout, a camera right in the screen or a retractable module - in general, any technique that allows you to occupy the maximum percentage of the front panel surface on the screen - a full-size top panel has returned, a shocking element for the user of modern smartphones. Of course, there is a technical justification for this, after all, the designers could not make such untimely decisions, simply based on their own whim. I have already mentioned these solutions above: in addition to the front camera and earpiece, this panel houses a depth sensor for the face recognition system, as well as the same motion sensor.
Due to the near-disappearance of the “chin” at the same time as this panel, the Google Pixel 4 always looks as if turned upside down from the front. However, I can not say that there is at least some problem in this. Such a “face” is in any case better than the past, with a “unibrow”.
The back panel received its controversial element - a large and necessarily, with all the colors of the entire smartphone, painted in a black block with a dual camera, flash and a spectral sensor. Unfortunately for Google, the company's designers failed to come up with an interesting move with "burners" like Apple. Here is a simple and boring black square. Combined with the white matte surface of our Pixel 4, it gives the impression of a prototype, a dummy. Yes, over time you get used to such a turn of creative thought, but the decision is still controversial.
In total, there are three color variations for the new “pixels”: black, white and orange. Only the color and texture of the back changes - glossy glass in black and matte in white and orange. The display bezels and sidewalls always remain black - with an orange power / lock key on the right edge.
The “regular” Pixel 4, due to the really small (5,7-inch) display, turned out to be truly compact. But there is no news here - both Google and Apple keep small smartphones in their assortment. However, compared to the same iPhone 11, for example, Pixel 4 seems quite tiny. And it's great - it may not always be possible to control it with one hand (after all, 5,7 inches is still too much to reach the corners of the screen with your thumb), but interacting with the gadget is extremely pleasant. In addition, it falls into the pocket of your pants and does not stick out from there as a reminder of our universal addiction to gadgets. In terms of dimensions, this is a smartphone of a healthy person. And at the same time, an endangered species.
The layout is classic - in addition to the gesture sensor, Google did not come up with any new controls or methods of interacting with the smartphone. The keys are on the right, the SIM tray is on the left, the USB Type-C port is on the bottom, the mini-jack is history. Alas, alas, the movement of corporations against the wires can no longer be stopped. It remains only to relax and at least try to enjoy it. By the way, the manufacturer does not put any headphones or an adapter from USB Type-C to a mini-jack in the box with the smartphone. Fu Fu Fu.
But at least there is moisture and dust protection according to the IP68 standard. And tempered glass Gorilla Glass 5 on both sides.
The fingerprint scanner, which still could not be found in the leaked photos of the smartphone, was not in it at all. It's not clear what stopped Google from using the commonly used optical/ultrasonic sensor built into the screen sandwich - probably just a desire to be special snowflakes. But it turned out like Apple did - only its own Face ID. Reliable, with the participation of a depth sensor, and working in the dark, almost as fast, but far from being so stable - it does not always recognize a face the first time. It seems that they repeated for the iPhone, but they did it a little worse. But at least the ability to confirm payment via Google Pay with the help of a person has earned - at the start there was a failure with this. But there is still no support for login confirmation in the vast majority of Android applications - to enter my banking application (Raiffeisen Online), I had to enter a password every time, it is configured exclusively for a fingerprint scanner. This is not iOS with its unification.
There was supposed to be a piece about smartphone control using gestures and several unique Pixel 4 features that appeared thanks to the use of the new Motion Sense sensor, but all this functionality is not available in Russia for unknown reasons - and, I think, in all countries where the "pixel" not officially sold. Why, why - inexplicable. However, reviews from those countries where the smartphone is quietly sold allow us to conclude that there is nothing to regret here.
Google Pixel 4 is running the latest version of the proprietary operating system - Android 10. With the enhanced functionality that the Pixel Launcher brings to it. It always has something that you will not find - at least for some time after the release of Pixel - on other smartphones running the latest "robot".
First of all, these are advanced options for customizing the appearance of the operating system, where not only fresh “live wallpapers” appeared, but also full-fledged themes, in which icons in the notification panel, system colors and fonts also change - and not necessarily in relation to the theme. And the wallpaper, by the way, can be modified independently, "drawing" on the proposed "canvas". In addition, they change color when switching the interface theme from light to dark. The Always-On Display system has also been updated, with which you can now display not only the clock, system information and notification icons, but also entire notifications - and respond to them without unlocking the phone. The control system with only gestures, without a navigation bar, is becoming completely familiar - it is also offered as a basic one in Google Pixel 4, but if desired, the familiar icons at the bottom of the screen can be returned.
Well, it is worth noting a couple of unique (so far) applications. "Safety" allows you to enter your own medical information and set emergency contacts that will be displayed on the lock screen, there is also a reaction to an accident using an accelerometer, but again it is not available in Russia. The updated Voice Recorder application now allows you not only to record a voice, but also to do it with geotagging, interrupting by searching for existing voice notes and using speech recognition - so far, however, only English works.
