New article: OPPO Reno smartphone review: raising an eyebrow
OPPO Reno is not just another gadget of a Chinese brand that has been trying to break into (well, or return to) the European market for several years, but so far is far from the same results as it has achieved in its homeland. No, Reno is essentially a whole strategy, a sub-brand that will include many smartphones. A proper name instead of alphabetic indices should increase recognition, and a number of design solutions should create additional attractiveness. Three devices will be the first under this sub-brand, we have already told on the day of their European announcement. The most interesting of them is, of course, the OPPO Reno 10x Zoom, a smartphone with 10x hybrid zoom, a slightly more budget competitor. Huawei P30 Pro. We will definitely talk about it in detail closer to its launch on the market - this will most likely happen in June. The OPPO Reno 5G also entered the series - this gadget, as the name implies, is not relevant for us yet.
But first of all, of course, we are talking about the "titular" smartphone - OPPO Reno. This is a middle-class device, the first impressions about the use of which I have already shared in the material mentioned above. Now it's time for a detailed conversation. OPPO Reno is primarily characterized by an original design with an almost frameless screen and a retractable unit with a front camera and flash, as well as an unusual rear panel solution. At the same time, its characteristics are quite ordinary: Qualcomm Snapdragon 710, 6 GB + 256 GB of memory (RAM + permanent), the main camera is 48 megapixels + 5-megapixel, which is responsible for the depth of field, and a 6,4-inch AMOLED display. Is there any zest in OPPO Reno, besides design, with which it can hook the user? The competition in the price segment of “about 40 thousand”, to put it mildly, is lethal.
OPPO still last year with a model Find X made an original move and created a smartphone in which an almost frameless display is combined with the absence of annoying inclusions in it like “monobrow” / “droplets” or a hole in the spirit Honor View 20/Samsung Galaxy S10. And this is not a mechanical slider, but a smartphone with an electric drive of the camera unit, which houses both the rear module and the front camera. The smartphone, despite the very high-quality performance, did not gain any serious success - first of all, the recognition and popularity of the brand was not enough. Our people were not ready to buy not Samsung, not Huawei and not Apple at the usual “flagship” price. Well, in OPPO Reno, the branded find has migrated to the lower segment.
The novelty has already received a branded mechanical retractable module, but executed a little differently. OPPO did not get rid of the cameras on the rear panel, removing only the front camera (front) and flash (rear) on the retractable part. And it does not move vertically upwards, but at an angle, as if raising an eyebrow: “Hey, buddy, do you really want to take a selfie? Seriously?" Yes, seriously, Reno, no need for this skepticism. In fact, the smartphone looks cool and fresh when extended. As for security, as in the case of Find X, the manufacturer claims that the module manages to hide in a little less than a second. If you drop your smartphone from a height of human height, it will not suffer, but if you drop it from a pocket height, then you may not have time to hide.
In addition to the camera and flash, a speaker is also hidden in this module. Only a slot fit into a thin frame above the screen, while the speaker itself is alone here - on a sliding block. A common problem for all modern sliders - the ability to draw dust through the cracks - has also affected the OPPO Reno. If you do not use identification through face recognition or do not take 10-20 selfies a day (in these cases, constantly opening the module sheds dust), then you will have to wipe it every time before using the front camera. The resource of the mechanism is 200 operations. This should be more than enough for the life cycle of a smartphone.
The retractable module made it possible to fill 6,4% of the front panel with a 93,1-inch screen - and these are honest inches, without "ears" or pixels occupied by some interspersed. I note that there are not only very narrow side frames and indentation from above, but also an unusually small “chin”. The Find X effect with its curved edges is not achieved, the company could not almost completely occupy the “face” screen here, but it’s still convenient to use Reno – the ratio of dimensions and display diagonal is excellent.
However, it is quite thick (9 mm) and heavy (185 grams) smartphone. Partially, the thickness is hidden by the usual technique with beveled edges on the back side (due to this, the device is even more comfortable to hold in your hand), but here another trend of the times comes into play. The fact is that the back is made of glass - very slippery, polished glass, without any spraying. As a result, the smartphone tends to slip out of a wet hand or run away from an imperfectly horizontal surface. Despite the use of Gorilla Glass 6 on the front and back, the case becomes an almost must-have accessory. It is included, but adds a few more millimeters of thickness. Yes, it will certainly be possible to find thin cases on sale that fit the smartphone like a second skin, but in any case, OPPO Reno is not for lovers of compact gadgets.
There are two color variations of OPPO Reno - black (Jet Black), as in our case, and blue (Ocean Blue). I would not say that they are especially attractive, it is not a pity to hide this smartphone in a case.
The back is decorated with original. Lenses of different sizes are striking, which, like droplets, “fly” onto a long decorative strip with a small bump. This is not some kind of sensor or key, but just a protrusion that performs two functions: firstly, it protects the lenses from damage if you put your smartphone face up; secondly, due to this protrusion, you tactilely feel where the cameras are, and you blur the lenses much less.
In the design of OPPO Reno, a couple more points attract attention. These are the power and volume keys spaced on different sides and the presence of a mini-jack - we are already starting to wean from the latter. And every appearance of the legendary connector in smartphones of the middle and upper price categories is perceived as a pleasant surprise.
The fingerprint scanner is placed on the screen - this is the most expected move from OPPO: after all, it was the brands of the BBK concern (OPPO, Vivo, OnePlus) who were the first to bring this technology to the masses, and they have clearly already learned how to handle it. No one admits what type of sensor is used here - optical or ultrasonic (rather the latter, because the scanner recognizes a wet finger), but it works really well. The sensor reacts to touch relatively quickly (about half a second), the percentage of failures is low. You can safely use this method of identification, without the need to duplicate face recognition. But if you wish, you can do this too - here such a function is implemented due to the front camera, however, there are no additional sensors for this. The module will helpfully slide out when you try to unlock the gadget - in the manner Vivo V15 Pro.
