New article: MSI GeForce RTX 2060 Ventus 6G OC video card review: the most affordable “beams”

If you follow computer technology and components for PC players in particular, then you know very well that the GeForce RTX 2060 is currently the youngest NVIDIA graphics accelerator based on the Turing chip, which supports all modern NVIDIA "chips", including hardware ray tracing . However, since recently, real-time ray tracing, along with products under the RTX brand, has also been supported by GeForce GTX cards of the Truring generation and even Pascal, although they do not have specialized logic for this. This somewhat complicates the choice of video card. And the question of choice is especially acute between models such as the GeForce RTX 2060 and GeForce GTX 1660 Ti. The first supports ray tracing at the hardware level, but Tishka, as a rule, costs less. Let's deal with this issue, and at the same time we will study in detail the MSI GeForce RTX 2060 Ventus 6G OC model, which was sent to the test lab.

#Specifications and design features

Let me remind you that recently on our website review released MSI GeForce RTX 2080 Ventus 8G OC graphics cards. We liked this model - it turned out to be faster, quieter, cooler and more affordable than the reference version of the Founders Edition. The MSI GeForce RTX 2060 Ventus 6G OC accelerator looks like it is the little brother of the MSI GeForce RTX 2080 Ventus 8G OC - these devices are very similar in appearance. And yet, the GeForce RTX 2060 is the GeForce RTX 2060. The main technical characteristics of the video card in question are presented in the table below.

There was nothing unusual included with the MSI GeForce RTX 2060 Ventus 6G OC: paper documentation and a CD with drivers and related software.

The manufacturer itself claims that the MSI GeForce RTX 2060 Ventus 6G OC "has an aggressive design made in neutral colors." Whether you like this look of the video card or not, decide for yourself, but I will supplement your impressions with the information that this video card will look great together with MSI MEG series boards, as well as in white cases with a side window.

A rather large dual-fan cooler is responsible for cooling the GPU and memory chips in the MSI GeForce RTX 2060 Ventus 6G OC. The length of the device is a modest 230 mm. The thickness of the cooler corresponds to the two expansion slots of the case. However, the MSI GeForce RTX 2060 Ventus 6G OC turned out to be quite wide - 125 mm versus the standard 100 mm. If you are building a PC in a standard Midi or Full-Tower case, then you will not have compatibility problems, but the video card runs the risk of not fitting into some compact cases of the Slim Desktop form factor.

As for the fans, the device uses two 85 mm Torx 2.0 turntables (marking - PLD09210S12HH manufactured by Power Logic), each of which has 14 blades. They rotate in one direction and, accordingly, direct the air flows so that they leave the limits of the computer case. The manufacturer claims that the fan blades have a unique shape that improves heat dissipation by creating more concentrated air pressure. The speed of the impellers varies from 800 to 3400 rpm. The design of the fans uses double rolling bearings.

I’ll warn you right away: the MSI GeForce RTX 2060 Ventus 6G OC I / O panel does not have a DVI port - this can be a problem for owners of older monitors. But in the same place, three DisplayPorts and one HDMI output are soldered at once. The rest of the space is occupied by a sufficiently large grille, necessary for the removal of heated air.

The video card has no modding elements - no backlight, no additional screens that are now fashionable. On the end there are only inscriptions MSI and GeForce RTX.

But wait! The video card is equipped with a plastic backplate. The device itself, as we have already found out, has a short length, so it makes no sense to increase the rigidity of the structure. Plastic, of course, is not an element of the cooling system either - besides, the plate does not come into contact with the reverse side of the printed circuit board, while in the same MSI GeForce RTX 2080 Ventus 8G OC, for example, the backplate removes heat from the GPU and memory chips through thermal pads. So the rear plastic plate in this case performs only two functions: decorative and protective - on the RTX series video cards, a lot of small parts are soldered, which can be accidentally knocked off.

The MSI GeForce RTX 2060 Ventus 6G OC cooler is removed quite simply - to do this, unscrew the four spring-loaded screws. The radiator received a rather large aluminum sole, which, with the help of thermal pads, comes into contact with the GDDR6 memory chips. Copper heat pipes directly interact with the GPU - the so-called direct contact technology is used. There are four heat pipes, they have a diameter of 6 mm and all are in contact with the GPU. Four is not a little: some manufacturers like to stuff tubes into the radiator, but only 2-3 of them are in contact with the chip. In my opinion, the construction used here should work more efficiently than this one. Heat is transferred from the tubes to large longitudinal aluminum fins - the radiator in the MSI GeForce RTX 2060 Ventus 6G OC has a single-section design.

Some elements of the power converter are cooled by a separate black aluminum radiator.

The “gaps” among the mosfets and chokes make it clear that the MSI GeForce RTX 2060 Ventus 6G OC is based on the PCB used in the MSI Gaming series video cards. The VRM zone has only six power phases, in which four channels are responsible for the operation of the GPU, and the remaining two are for the video memory. In the first case, the phases are controlled by the ON Semiconductor NCP81610 PWM controller, in the second case, by the uPI uP1666Q. Well, we see that the Ventus version's power converter is cut even against the background of the NVIDIA reference model, i.e. Founders Edition.

The video card receives additional power through a single eight-pin connector. If we take into account the power lines of the PCI Express slot, then in theory the power consumption of the device can reach 225 watts.

There are six Micron GDDR106 memory chips marked 6UA8 D77WCW around the rather big TU9 GPU. They operate at a real frequency of 1750 MHz, the effective frequency is 14 MHz.
