New article: First impressions of Huawei Y8p and Y6p smartphones

Three new items came out at once: the ultra-budget Y5p and the simply inexpensive Y6p and Y8p. In this article, we will talk specifically about the new “six” with the “eight”, which received triple rear cameras, front cameras in “droplet” cutouts, 6,3-inch screens, but did not receive Google services: instead of them, Huawei mobile services. On this, perhaps, the common features of these two models ends - details below.

New article: First impressions of Huawei Y8p and Y6p smartphones

Despite the almost identical name, the same display diagonal and the general commitment to Huawei mobile services, the differences between Huawei Y8p and Huawei Y6p and in characteristics, and even in concept, are more than common. Let's talk about each of the smartphones separately.

New article: First impressions of Huawei Y8p and Y6p smartphones

Huawei Y8p is an unusual by today's standards, relatively small, thin and elegant smartphone. Despite the screen of a rather large diagonal (6,3 inches), it retained propriety in size: firstly, due to the minimal frames around the display (the percentage of the occupied front surface is not specified, but the number is clearly more than 80%), and secondly, thanks to thin faces, thirdly, we say thanks to the slightly curved edges of the back. Be that as it may, it is pleasant to hold the Huawei Y8s in your hand, and the gadget weighing 163 grams is almost not felt in your pocket.

Despite the slightly outdated design of the front panel with a waterdrop notch, Huawei Y8p looks good thanks to the design of glass in front and behind and polished metal-like plastic around the perimeter. The three-chamber block is also inscribed neatly and tastefully. There are three color versions of Huawei Y8p: light blue, midnight black and, sold exclusively in the company's online store, emerald green.

Another unusual detail for a smartphone of this price category is the AMOLED display. The only company that consistently puts organic LED screens in its low-cost smartphones is Samsung. Now Huawei joins the Koreans - Y8p is a pioneer model in this respect. And here it’s not just OLED, but with a high resolution (2400 × 1080), so even in theory you shouldn’t worry about the Pentile image crumbling into subpixels. In practice, all the more there are no problems: the image is sharp, clear and full-color. True, PWM is noticeable when the brightness is lowered to the minimum marks, but a similar problem occurs with expensive OLEDs.

Well, the third distinguishing feature of Huawei Y8p is a fingerprint scanner built into the surface of the screen. If in terms of OLED and compactness you can still find some analogues, then the Y8p got a feature that only smartphones that cost at least twice as much can boast. I wouldn’t say that it’s worth unconditionally rejoicing at this - the optical sensor does not respond to the touch of wet fingers and works noticeably slower than the traditional capacitive one on the rear panel of the Y6p, but this at least allows you to leave the back more accurate, without unnecessary inserts.

Otherwise, Huawei Y8p is quite consistent with our ideas about what a smartphone should be today for 17 thousand rubles. It uses last year's HiSilicon Kirin 710F hardware platform - four ARM Cortex-A73 cores with a frequency of 2,2 GHz and four more ARM Cortex-A53 with a frequency of 1,7 GHz. Graphic coprocessor - ARM Mali-G51 MP4. The manufacturing process is 14 nm. Nothing outstanding, but the efforts of this platform, combined with 4 GB of RAM, are enough to run most of the modern games on the smartphone, all basic applications function smoothly, and the operating system works smoothly - the screens slow down slightly when flipping, compared to flagships, but this is quite normal for a gadget in this price category. There is only one option for built-in flash memory - 128 GB, expandable using a card of its own NM format (up to 256 GB). I note that Huawei Y8p received both the current USB Type-C port and a mini-jack.

The rear triple camera consists of a 48-megapixel main Quad Bayer module with an aperture ratio of ƒ / 1,9 and phase detection autofocus and a wide-angle module with a resolution of 8 megapixels and aperture ratio of ƒ / 1,8 without autofocus. The third camera is a 2MP depth sensor, which serves to blur the background when shooting portraits. As befits a Huawei smartphone, it can refine images with the help of "artificial intelligence" and offers a night mode with multi-frame exposure. By default, shooting on the main module is carried out at a resolution of 12 megapixels, but full (48 megapixels) resolution can also be activated. Video Huawei Y8p can shoot at 1080p resolution at up to 60 frames per second. The front camera, located in the “droplet” cutout in the center of the status bar, has a resolution of 16 megapixels at an aperture of ƒ / 2,0 - background blur is also available with it. In general, in terms of photo and video capabilities, Huawei Y8p cannot be called an outstanding device, but it is quite adequate for the market.

Huawei Y8p is equipped with a 4000 mAh battery - and due to the combination of an OLED display with a dark theme available in EMUI 10, it can quite confidently hold a charge for up to a day and a half. The smartphone will be available for pre-order on May 26 at a price of 16 rubles. Sales start June 999th. When pre-ordering, a Huawei Band 5 Pro bracelet is included as a gift.

Huawei Y6p - smart phone is faster. From the “face” it is almost impossible to distinguish between Y8p and Y6p, unless you include a contrasting picture: the same cutouts, screens of the same diagonal, except that the Y8p has slightly thinner frames and an OLED screen instead of an LCD.

But otherwise, the Huawei Y6p is noticeably different: there is a thicker body (thanks to a capacious 5000 mAh battery), and a back without curved edges, and a larger three-chamber unit with a separate flash, and a fingerprint scanner on this very back.

Huawei Y6p has two color variations: emerald green and midnight black. The smartphone is decorated with plastic both around the edges and on the back panel (but it is difficult to distinguish it from glass, of course), and, despite the seemingly small difference in size from the Y8p, it feels like a noticeably larger gadget, it is not so comfortable to hold it in your hand .

LCD display Huawei Y6p with the same diagonal received HD-resolution, you can see a slight pixelation in the fonts. The hardware platform is Mediatek MT6762R Helio P22, four Cortex-A53 cores at 2,0 GHz and four Cortex-A53 cores at 1,5 GHz, as well as a PowerVR GE8320 graphics subsystem. The manufacturing process is 12 nm. The device is equipped with 3 GB of RAM and 64 GB of non-volatile memory, expandable using a classic MicroSD card, for which a separate slot is allocated - you do not need to sacrifice one of the SIM cards. Another joy of a prudent user is the same battery for five thousand milliampere-hours: despite the liquid crystal display, it will most likely be necessary to charge the smartphone once every couple of days. Plus, reverse charging is available with a cable.

The camera is also simpler: the triple block includes a 13-megapixel main module, a 5-megapixel wide-angle and a depth sensor. Sales of Huawei Y6p will start on June 5 at a price of 10 rubles.

Smartphones run on Android 10 with the latest version of the EMUI 10.1 shell. We have already written a lot about the features of Huawei smartphones in 2020. I bring to your attention an article about Huawei Mobile Services и analysis of "how to live without Google services" of the sample of winter 2019. Since then, a lot has changed - more and more popular software appears in AppGallery, the Wallet contactless payment service has been added (both new smartphones received NFC modules, you can use them to pay in stores), restrictions on installing applications that are not available in AppGallery through third-party services are reduced, but still yes - you have to put up with the inaccessibility of some applications and games tied to GMS. At the same time, purely technologically, both Huawei Y8p and Huawei Y6p look as competitive as possible.
