New article: Everything you missed: the world saw the PlayStation 5, fresh hits from Xiaomi and the project of an ultralight domestic rocket

#What's new in the world?

Undoubtedly, the most anticipated event of the past week was Sony PlayStation 5 announcement. The presentation, which took place online and was broadcast live on YouTube, was watched by 7,5 million people. Head of PlayStation Jim Ryan (Jim Ryan) called the appearance of the PS5 the most striking among all the consoles Sony. But users of social networks have her appearance provoked a controversy.

Users call the console too big, compare it with a California mansion, a coffee machine, a skyscraper, and even a shawarma. This, of course, is witty, funny - everything we like, but the claims to the size of the console look somehow stretched. First, Sony has yet to release full specifications, including dimensions and weight. And secondly, is it really important for a home device? After all, no one scolds an 80-inch TV for being too large.

Interestingly, the PlayStation 5 will be released in two versions: with and without a Blu-ray drive. Perhaps this is Sony's way of caring for those who live in places with slow Internet in order to maximize its audience, but in itself such a gesture in 2020 looks strange. However, in the case of all consoles, the most important thing has always been and will be games. Most of the projects will be released on all platforms, this is logical, but there will also be exclusives. Gran Turismo 5, Marvel Spider-Man Miles Morales, Sackboy: A Big Adventure, Ratchet and Clank Rift Apart, Demon's Souls remake and Horizon Zero Dawn 7 will be available for PlayStation 2 at launch. announced - presumably this will happen in the fall, simultaneously or almost simultaneously with the disclosure of the price of the new Xbox from Microsoft.

Last week there was enough sad news. For example, the Computex exhibition, which we dearly love and attend every year, was officially canceled due to coronavirus. This event was always held in early June, but initially this year the organizers wanted to postpone it to September - they say, by that time the pandemic will end, and the virus itself will not be scary to anyone. But everything turned out to be not so simple, and as a result, the next Computex will take place in 2021, on the usual dates - from June 1 to 4.

Xiaomi had a very productive week. First she introduced Mi Band 5 bracelet, which will cost only $32 and will begin selling in a week - June 18. This novelty will be equipped with a 1,2-inch AMOLED display, connect to a smartphone via Bluetooth 5.0, and will also receive an NFC module for contactless payments. The set of sensors includes an accelerometer, barometer, heart rate and proximity sensors. More than ten sports modes have been implemented, plus a menstrual cycle tracking function. In addition, the device is able to collect detailed information about the quality and duration of sleep without using separate paid applications. Well, for those who do not need an NFC module, a model without it will be released at a price of $27.

In addition to the bracelet, Xiaomi introduced another smartphone Redmi 9 with a large screen and a built-in camera with four modules. It will be sold at a price of €149. The screen diagonal of Redmi 9 is 6,53 inches, the resolution is 2340 × 1080 pixels, and there is a compact teardrop-shaped cutout for the front camera on top. The hardware platform is MediaTek Helio G80 with an eight-core CPU. On the back of the case, there is a camera that includes a 13-megapixel main module, an ultra-wide-angle module with a 118-degree field of view and an 8-megapixel sensor resolution, a 5-megapixel macro module with the ability to shoot at a distance of 4 cm, and a 2-megapixel depth sensor. Russian prices have not yet been announced, but it seems that the device will be very good for its money.

And another “bomb” from a Chinese manufacturer - laptops Xiaomi Mi Notebook Pro 15 2020 on the Intel Comet Lake platform. These laptops are equipped with high-quality 15,6-inch displays with a resolution of 1920 × 1080 pixels, with 100% coverage of sRGB space and Gorilla Glass 3 protective glass. There are two basic modifications to choose from: with a Core i5-10210U processor and Core i7-10510U . In the first case, the amount of DDR4-2666 RAM will be 8 GB, in the second - 16 GB, and the capacity of the PCIe NVMe SSD drive will be 512 GB and 1 TB, respectively. But the main thing, as always, is the prices. The younger version of Xiaomi Mi Notebook Pro 15 2020 is priced at $850, the older version is $1. And this is just not bad, especially if the screen is really as good as the manufacturer promises.

Good news for Roscosmos and the entire space industry of our country - NASA will pay $90 million to transport an astronaut to the ISS. Despite the successful launch of the SpaceX Crew Dragon manned spacecraft as part of the Demo-2 (DM-2) mission, about which we talked a lot in the pilot issue of the digest, NASA intends to continue to cooperate with Roskosmos when sending astronauts to the ISS. In addition, Russian cosmonauts will launch into space from a cosmodrome in Florida next year.

Last week, NASA announced it would send astronaut Kate Rubins (pictured above) to the ISS for a six-month mission as a flight engineer and crew member for Expedition 63/64. She will be sent to the ISS together with cosmonauts Sergei Ryzhikov and Sergei Kud-Sverchkov on the Soyuz MS-17 spacecraft, which will be launched from the Baikonur Cosmodrome on October 14, 2020. It is for this launch that NASA will pay $90 million, exactly the same as the cost of a seat in the Soyuz for a US astronaut before the successful flight of the SpaceX Crew Dragon.

Another potentially good news for the space industry in our country is CosmoKurs, a private company, presented a project for an ultralight launch vehicle, with which he plans to participate in the competition of the National Technology Initiative (NTI) Aeronet. Previously, NTI promised to finance the development of several projects to create ultra-light launch vehicles. Thus, during this year it is planned to spend approximately $150 thousand on the development of at least three projects of ultra-light launch vehicles.

The project involves the construction of a two-stage 19-meter rocket with nine engines, which is capable of launching approximately 500 kg of cargo into a sun-synchronous orbit at an altitude of about 265 km. By the way, this is not the only development of CosmoKurs - the company is going to provide services for tourist suborbital flights and is working on a single-stage return rocket and a seven-seater spacecraft, a flight on which could cost approximately 200-250 thousand dollars, that is, almost free by the standards of space tourism.

However, it is one thing to publish beautiful projects with exciting descriptions, and another thing to bring them to life and test them. Exactly the second part did not work out for the Russian company Hoversurf, which produces the promising Scorpion hoverbike.

This hoverbike crashed during a demonstration flight in Dubai. At an altitude of about 30 meters, the car lost stability, after which the pilot went down, but the automation did not “catch” the horizon and hit the car with two rear propellers on the concrete. The published video, at first glance, does not look scary at all, but it is exactly until the moment when you start thinking about screws with an open design.

In the event of an accident, propellers can damage not only the pilot, but also surrounding objects and spectators. However, this time everything ended well - during the test flight there were no people on the site, and the pilot himself was not injured.

Another news from NASA sounds a little sad - The launch of the long-suffering James Webb Space Telescope has been postponed indefinitely.. The launch was last scheduled for March 2021, and the official reason for its cancellation was the coronavirus epidemic. However, this is not the only problem to be solved. Initially, the launch project for the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) was supposed to be launched into orbit in October 2018, and today NASA is cautiously expressing hope for a launch “before the end of 2021”. Multiple delays have led to a rise in the cost of the project, which is already estimated at $8,8 billion.

Last weekend, Alexander Babulin pleased with a review of unusual game project “If Found...”, which is an interactive comic about being transgender, accepting yourself, and being accepted by others. I did not think that I myself would be happy to read about the game on such a controversial topic, but it turned out that the project deserves attention. According to the author, he has an original and effective visual style, as well as sound, although in general the game lacks interactivity a little.
