New version of SMPlayer media player 21.8

Three years after the last release, the SMPlayer 21.8 multimedia player has been released, providing a graphical add-on over MPlayer or MPV. SMPlayer features a lightweight interface with the ability to change themes, support for playing videos from Youtube, support for downloading subtitles from opensubtitles.org, flexible playback settings (for example, you can change the playback speed). The program is written in C++ using the Qt library and distributed under the GPLv2 license. Binary builds are generated for Linux, macOS and Windows.

In the new version:

  • Added playback speed presets (0.25x, 0.5x, 1.25x, 1.5x, 1.75x).
  • Added option to rotate video 180 degrees.
  • When running in an environment based on the Wayland protocol, the transition to the power saving mode is disabled.
  • Added support for macOS platform.
  • Improved automatic adaptation of the size of the main window.
  • Resolved an issue with loading YouTube playlists.
  • Eliminated a second delay when switching between playlist items.
  • Fixed issues with audio channels and CD playback via mvp.
  • For Linux, builds are generated in appimage, flatpak, and snap formats. The flatpak and snap packages include variants of the mpv and mplayer applications with patches to improve Wayland support.
