Oculus VR unveiled its next-generation PC VR headset at GDC 2019, dubbed the Oculus Rift S.
The Rift S is priced at $399, which is $50 more than the original Rift that came out in 2013.
As TechCrunch reported last year, the Rift S is a compromise. The decision to release it was made only after the company abandoned more radical changes in the design of the device.
Instead of OLED displays, the new product uses LCD panels (like the Oculus Go) with a higher resolution than the Rift - 1440 Γ 1280 pixels versus 1200 Γ 1080 pixels. However, the screen refresh rate dropped from 90 to 80 Hz. According to TechCrunch, the viewing angle of the new model is slightly larger than the Rift.
Like the Oculus Quest, the new headset will ship with updated Oculus Touch controllers. The device features the same built-in audio system as the Oculus Quest with Oculus Go, with an audio jack that lets you use your favorite headphones.
There are five security cameras onboard the Rift S that can be used to view your surroundings with the Passthrough+ feature without removing your headset. The headset uses an internal Oculus Insight tracking system, which eliminates the need for external sensors.
Remarkably, Lenovo participated in the work on the new model. In particular, the Chinese company helped improve the design of the Rift S, which Oculus claims is more comfortable with better weight distribution and improved light isolation, as well as a simpler, single-cable system for a more comfortable experience.
PC compatibility requirements remain largely the same, although a system with a faster processor may be needed. You can check if your computer system meets the necessary requirements before you decide to buy Rift S using a special application from Oculus.
