New iPhones will get two-way wireless charging and increased battery capacity

This year, Apple phones have a good chance of getting a two-way (reversible) wireless charging feature, which will allow you to use your iPhone to recharge other devices, such as the recently introduced AirPods 2, says Ming-Chi Kuo, an analyst at TF International Securities, in a report for investors.

New iPhones will get two-way wireless charging and increased battery capacity

Future Qi-enabled iPhones can be used to charge any other Qi-enabled device, such as charging your friend's phone (even if it's a Samsung Galaxy) or charging AirPods 2 headphones with a wireless charging case on the go. Thus, the iPhone can be used as a wireless charging station.

“We expect new iPhone models in the second half of 2019 to support two-way wireless charging. While the iPhone won't be the first high-end smartphone to feature this technology, the new feature will make it more convenient to use, for example, to recharge new AirPods, making them more comfortable to share," Kuo said.

Samsung has already introduced a similar feature in its Galaxy 2019 smartphones, and in these devices it is called Wireless PowerShare. Thus, in the near future, Galaxy and iPhone will be able to be used to recharge each other, which will be a good opportunity for fans of competing companies to interact. Huawei smartphones also support this technology.

Companies such as Compeq, which supplies battery boards, and STMicro, which makes related controllers, will benefit most from the new technology in Apple devices, as it will increase the average price of their components.

According to the analyst, in order for the new feature to work, Apple will have to go for a slight increase in the size of future smartphones, as well as increase the capacity of their battery. So, according to Kuo, the battery capacity for the successor to the 6,5-inch iPhone XS Max could increase by 10-15 percent, and the battery capacity of the 5,8-inch successor to the OLED iPhone XS could increase by 20-25 percent. At the same time, the successor to the iPhone XR will remain virtually unchanged.
