Galaxy Note 10's new DeX features make desktop mode much more useful

Among the many updates and features coming to Galaxy Note 10 and Note 10 Plus, there is also an updated version of DeX - Samsung's desktop environment running on a smartphone. While previous versions of DeX required you to connect your phone to a monitor and use a mouse and keyboard in conjunction with it, the new version allows you to connect your Note 10 to a Windows or macOS computer to open a window with all the smartphone applications on a desktop PC or laptop.

You can not only remotely control your phone and use the applications installed on it without taking your hands off the computer keyboard, but even drag and drop files from your desktop to your smartphone and vice versa. For those who liked the old DeX way of working, there is no reason to be upset: Note 10 smartphones still support the traditional DeX desktop interface when using only the display, mouse and keyboard. For this bundle to work, you just need a USB-C -> HDMI adapter.

In addition, Samsung has partnered with Microsoft to preinstall the Your Phone app on the device, which allows you to send SMS messages and transfer images wirelessly between a paired phone and a Windows PC. There is also a toggle to connect and disconnect your phone in the quick action bar in UI One.

DeX is Samsung's answer to device convergence, offering a desktop-like experience with just a phone or tablet. Previous attempts, however, have been more interesting in theory than in practice, since it is usually easier to use a laptop than to find a display, mouse and keyboard to connect to a phone.

DeX functionality is available in many of Samsung's latest devices, including the recently introduced Galaxy Tab S6, which has a dedicated display mode when a keyboard is connected. Unfortunately, the Galaxy S10 won't support the new DeX features with Windows and macOS computers, despite the same basic set of specs as the Note 10.
