New MacBook Air still lags behind 2019 MacBook Pro in performance

Earlier this week, Apple introduced an updated version of its MacBook Air. According to the company, the novelty has become twice as productive as its predecessor. Based on this, the WCCFTech resource decided to check how close the new product was to the basic modification of last year's MacBook Pro 13, because the previous version of the Air lagged far behind it.

The base version of the updated MacBook Air is built on a dual-core Core i3, while the statement about a twofold increase in performance is more likely true for a model on a certain quad-core Core i5 processor with frequencies of 1,1 / 3,5 GHz. What exactly this CPU model is is not clear, since there is no processor with similar characteristics on the Intel website. Apparently, Intel again provided Apple with some exclusive chip modifications. However, such a processor can be considered similar to the Core i5-1035G1 with frequencies of 1,1 / 3,6 GHz.

In turn, the most affordable MacBook Pro of 2019 is built on a quad-core Core i5-8257U, which has frequencies of 1,4 / 3,9 GHz. Here, however, it is worth considering the difference in architectures. The new MacBook Air has an Ice Lake processor, while last year's MacBook Pro has a Coffee Lake processor.

However, that doesn't stop last year's MacBook Pro from still being well ahead of the MacBook Air in terms of multi-threaded performance, according to Geekbench 5. There also seems to be a beefier cooling system that allows the processor in the MacBook Pro to run at a higher average. frequency. By the way, in the single-core test, the MacBook Air on Ice Lake was still faster, apparently due to the updated processor architecture.

However, this does not mean that the MacBook Air is a bad laptop. It's lighter than the Pro and also costs $200 less, while offering a larger SSD. So for everyday tasks, it may be the best choice.
