New Release of Raspberry Pi OS Distribution

The developers of the Raspberry Pi project have published the spring update of the Raspberry Pi OS 2022-04-04 (Raspbian) distribution based on the Debian package base. Three builds have been prepared for download - a reduced (297 MB) for server systems, with a basic desktop (837 MB) and a full one with an additional set of applications (2.2 GB). The distribution comes with a PIXEL user environment (a fork of LXDE). About 35 packages are available for installation from the repositories.

In the new release:

  • Experimental support for working with the Wayland protocol has been added to the graphics session. The use of Wayland was made possible by last year's transition of the PIXEL environment from the openbox window manager to mutter. Wayland support is still limited and some desktop components continue to use the X11 protocol while running under XWayland. You can activate a session based on Wayland in the "Advanced Options" section in the raspi-config configurator.
  • The use of the default "pi" predefined account has been removed, instead of which, on first boot, the user is given the option to create their own account.
  • There is a new System Settings Wizard that runs during the first boot process and allows you to configure language settings, define network connections, and install application updates. If earlier the launch of the wizard could be skipped by clicking the "Cancel" button, then from now on its use has become mandatory.

The setup wizard has an interface for creating the first account, and until this account is collected, the user will not be able to enter the user environment. The wizard itself now runs as a standalone environment rather than as an application in a desktop session. In addition to creating an account, the wizard also implements separate settings for each connected monitor, which are applied immediately and do not require a restart.

  • In a stripped-down image of Raspberry Pi OS Lite, a special dialog is displayed to create an account in console mode.

  • For systems in which the Raspberry Pi board is used in a separate form without being connected to a monitor, it is possible to create an account by preconfiguring the boot image with the Imager utility.

Another option for configuring a new user is to place on the boot partition of the SD card a file named userconf (or userconf.txt), which contains information about the created login and password in the format β€œlogin:password_hash” (to get the password hash, you can use the command β€œecho 'mypassword' | openssl passwd -6 -stdin").

  • For existing upgrade installations, the "sudo rename-user" command is provided to rename the "pi" account to an arbitrary name.
  • An issue with Bluetooth mice and keyboards has been resolved. Previously, setting up such input devices first required booting with a USB keyboard or USB mouse connected to set up Bluetooth pairing. The new First Time Pairing Wizard now automatically scans for ready-to-pair Bluetooth devices and connects them.
