New York fails in first attempt to recognize drivers' faces

Systems of total control, as a rule, are introduced under the rhetoric of combating very dangerous terrorism. But with a decrease in public freedom, the number of terrorist acts for some reason is not particularly noticeably reduced. So far, this is due to the usual imperfection of technology.

New York's intention to detect terrorists on the roads using facial recognition has not yet been implemented so smoothly. The Wall Street Journal received an email from the Central Transportation Authority (MTA) reporting that a 2018 technology test on the Robert Kennedy Bridge in New York City not only failed, but spectacularly failed - not a single face was found " within acceptable parameters. Despite such an unfavorable start, the MTA spokesman said that the pilot program will continue both on this section and on other bridges and tunnels.

New York fails in first attempt to recognize drivers' faces

Perhaps the problem is due to the inability of the technology at an early stage to recognize faces at higher speeds. After all, the Oak Ridge National Laboratory achieved 80% accuracy in a study to identify faces through windshields, but at low speed.

Continuous facial recognition is a very convenient tool for the work of law enforcement agencies, of course, subject to their further improvement. But it cannot be said that these methods of surveillance, which contribute to the prevention of crimes or the conduct of investigative measures, do not invade the privacy of every person, regardless of his relationship with the law. In fact, everyone plays the role of a suspect, and any state, as you know, tends to strengthen control and the vertical of power. At the same time, the introduction of visual detection systems will only make them take into account their work, but is unlikely to be able to overcome terrorism. In addition, the inevitable errors of electronic systems can make life difficult for law-abiding citizens.
