Updating the Steam OS distribution used on the Steam Deck gaming console

Valve has introduced an update to the Steam OS 3 operating system that comes with the Steam Deck gaming console. Steam OS 3 is based on Arch Linux, uses the Gamescope composite server based on the Wayland protocol to speed up the launch of games, comes with a read-only root file system, uses an atomic update mechanism, supports Flatpak packages, uses the PipeWire media server and provides two interface modes (Steam shell and KDE Plasma desktop). For regular PCs, the SteamOS 3 build is promised to be published later.

Among the changes:

  • In the quick access menu (Quick Access menu > Performance), the ability to set an arbitrary frame rate has been implemented and the "Half-Rate Shading" option has been added to save energy by reducing detail when shading individual zones (Variable Rate Shading is applied in 2Γ—2 blocks).
  • Added support for fTPM (Firmware TPM provided by the Trusted Execution Environment firmware), which allows you to install Windows 11 on the set-top box.
  • Improved compatibility with docking stations and power supplies connected via the Type-C port.
  • Added "... + volume down" button combination to reset after connecting an incompatible device through the Type-C port.
  • Added a notification when an unsuitable charger is connected.
  • Work has been done to reduce power consumption during idle or light load.
  • Improved stability.
