Linux Mint 20.1 Ulyssa Update

The first major update of Linux Mint version 20 (codename "Ulyssa") has been released. Linux Mint is based on the Ubuntu package base, but has a number of differences, including the default distribution policy for some software. Linux Mint positions itself as a turnkey solution for the end user, so many common applications and dependencies are included in the standard distribution.

Highlights in update 20.1:

  • Added the ability to create a web application from sites. For this, the Web-app manager application is used. In operation, the web application behaves like a regular desktop application - it has its own window, its own icon, and other features typical of desktop graphical applications.

  • The standard package includes an application for viewing IPTV Hypnotix, which can also display VODs, play movies and series. By default, Free-IPTV (third party provider) is offered as the IPTV provider.

  • The interface has been improved and the capabilities of the Cinnamon desktop environment and standard applications have been expanded, including the ability to mark files as favorites and access them directly through favorites (the icon on the taskbar in the tray, the favorites section in the menu and the favorites section in the file manager) has been included in the file manager ). Favorite file support has also been added to Xed, Xreader, Xviewer, Pix, and Warpinator.

  • Improved overall performance of Cinnamon, including when rendering at 4K resolution by 5%.

  • Improved support for spices (addons for Cinnamon).

  • The ippusbxd utility, which implemented connection to devices via the 'IPP over USB' protocol, was excluded from the standard distribution due to problems in the operation of printers and scanners. The way of working with printers and scanners was returned to the state that was in Linux Mint 19.3 and earlier, i.е. work directly through drivers that are connected automatically or manually. Manual connection of the device via the IPP protocol is saved.

  • File paths in the file system have been changed in accordance with the Unified Filesystem Layout. Now the files are located as follows (on the left is the link, on the right is the place to which the link points):

/bin → /usr/bin
/sbin → /usr/sbin
/lib → /usr/lib
/lib64 → /usr/lib64

  • Added a small collection of desktop backgrounds.

  • Other improvements and bug fixes have been made.

Linux Mint 20.1 will receive security updates until 2025.
