Rebecca Black Linux Live Update with a selection of Wayland-based environments

Formed new distribution release Rebecca Black Linux 2020-05-05, aimed at getting acquainted with the latest developments in providing support for Wayland in various desktop environments and applications. The distribution is built on the Debian package base and includes the latest release of libraries Wayland (slice from the master branch), Weston composite server and KDE, GNOME, Enlightenment E21 environments preconfigured to work on top of Wayland, Wayfire ΠΈ Liri ΠΈ Sway. The choice of environment is made through the login manager menu, while it is possible to launch a shell from an already running environment in the form of a nested session. For loading available two types of iso images - extended 2 GB for developers and regular 1.2 GB for users.

The distribution includes the latest versions of the Clutter, SDL, GTK, Qt, EFL / Elementary, FreeGLUT, GLFW, KDE Frameworks and Gstreamer libraries built with Wayland support, and the component Xwayland, which allows you to run regular X applications in an environment created using the Weston composite server. The distribution also includes versions of the gstreamer sound server, mpv media player, Calligra office suite, and KDE applications built as Wayland clients. A special graphical configurator is provided to configure udev and the parameters of multiseat configurations, in which several people with their own keyboards and mice can work at the same desktop at the same time (each user has his own independent cursor), a special graphical configurator is provided. Weston has RDP support enabled. The package includes the Mir display server and utility waypipe for remote launch of applications based on Wayland.

Major changes:

  • Custom environment excluded from assembly Orbital and window manager Orbment;
  • The assembly includes proprietary firmware for AMD GPUs;
  • Squashfs compression uses xz;
  • Redesigned login manager. Improved password authentication handling and added support for multiseat configurations;
  • The interface of the graphical configureseats utility has been improved. Support for setting udev rules has been added to the multiseat configuration utility.
  • External patches have been applied to EFL, Weston and Kwin to improve multiseat support;
  • The secondary components of the GNOME stack have been moved to the /opt directory;
  • An experimental build of GTK 4 is available for testing;
  • Added support for the Vulkan graphics API;
  • The Mesa package is built with swr (software rasterizer) drivers;
  • Includes Latte dock, Kvantum theme engine and Amarok music player;
  • The Sway environment is built with wlroots;
  • Instead of Debian Testing, the Debian 10 (Buster) packages are involved, but the kernel is left from Debian Testing (Bullseye);
  • Multimedia server included pipewire;
  • Added composite server Wayfire.
