[Updated] Qualcomm and Samsung won't ship 5G modems to Apple

According to network sources, Qualcomm and Samsung have decided to refuse to supply 5G modems to Apple.

Considering that Qualcomm and Apple are involved in a lot of patent disputes, this outcome is not surprising. As for the South Korean giant, the reason for the refusal lies in the fact that the manufacturer simply does not have time to produce a sufficient number of branded Exynos 5100 5G modems. If Samsung manages to increase the production of modems that provide operation in fifth-generation communication networks, then the company will receive certain advantages over Apple, which will allow us to begin discussing possible supplies.

[Updated] Qualcomm and Samsung won't ship 5G modems to Apple

Apple's preferred supplier is Intel, which has not yet organized the production of 5G modems. Intel's XMM 8160 modem is expected to be produced in sufficient quantities by 2020, which means it won't be able to make it into Apple products due out this year. You can also remember the Huawei Balong 5000 modem, but the Chinese manufacturer does not intend to supply branded products to other companies.

In the current situation, it can be assumed that the supply of 5G modems for Apple will be carried out by MediaTek, which has a suitable Helio M70 product at its disposal. Previously, information appeared on the network that the MediaTek modem does not meet Apple standards, but it is unknown how reliable this information is.

It is possible that Apple will prefer to wait for the appearance of 5G modems from Intel. Everything will depend on how quickly telecom operators can deploy fifth-generation networks.

[Updated] According to online sources, Apple plans to use Intel 5G modems, mass production of which should be organized by next year. It is reported that Intel may become the sole supplier of 5G modems to Apple. In order to supply enough modems to launch production of the new 5G iPhones in September 2020, Intel needs to unveil a fully finished product early next year. Company representatives confirm that Intel plans to supply XMM 8160 5G modems to Apple for the launch of the 5G iPhone in 2020.

According to some reports, Apple is developing its own modem chips. Network sources report that more than 1000 Apple engineers are working in this direction. Most likely, we are talking about modems for iPhone, which will be released in 2021.
