This year, the LG CX OLED series will get a pretty formidable competitor: TCL has just announced that its new 6 Series QLED TVs will use MiniLED technology to deliver OLED-level contrast at a third of the price of LG CX OLED 2020.
In addition to the new MiniLED technology that replaces traditional LED backlighting, TCL has redesigned feet to keep HDMI cables neatly tucked away. In addition, the 6 Series will offer the world's first THX Certified Game Mode TVs. We are talking about 120-Hz panels, support for variable refresh rates and automatic game mode. All this ensures minimal lag and the smoothest gaming experience, especially on consoles with support for 120 frames per second - that is, on the upcoming Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5.
How much is this miracle of technology? The 6 Series will be available in the same sizes as last year (55", 65", and 75", TCL said). And the cost will be $650 for the 55-inch TCL 55R635, $900 for the larger 65-inch TCL 65R635 and $1400 for the huge 75-inch TCL 75R635.
Those looking to get a cheaper QLED TV can take a closer look at TCL's new 5 Series. They don't feature MiniLED backlighting, but use quantum dot panels for an extended color range. In this case, we are talking about 100% coverage of the DCI-P3 color space. It appears to be the cheapest QLED TV on the market.
In terms of screen sizes and pricing, TCL said the 5 Series will cost less than $400 for a 50-inch model, with 55-, 65-, and 75-inch variants coming to market. The downside to the cheaper 5 Series is that it will still use conventional LED backlighting with 80 contrast control zones on the largest screen. It's far from the thousands of MiniLED areas in the 6 Series that deliver deeper black levels and high contrast, but the 5 Series still looks like a great budget option.
Both Series 6 and Series 5 of TCL TVs are available in the US starting today, albeit in limited quantities.
