FreeDB project announced to close soon

Project Free DB announced its closure. Starting from March 31, 2020, the website and all project-related services will be discontinued. Let us recall that the FreeDB project developed tools and a database with information about artists and musical compositions supplied on CDs. The database includes additional track information covering more than two million music CDs. The project continues to develop from free services similar to FreeDB MusicBrainz.

FreeDB is used in a variety of players and utilities, including foobar2000, mp3tag, MediaMonkey and JetAudio. The project's developments are distributed under the GPL license. Project was founded in 2001 to continue the development of the free base CDDB, which, after being acquired by Gracenote, became a commercial product provided under a proprietary license that requires logo display and permission when using CDDB, and prohibits the use of competing services in the same program.
