Merger of FreeNAS and TrueNAS projects announced

iXsystems announced about the unification of their products for the rapid deployment of network storage (NAS, Network-Attached Storage). Free distribution FreeNAS will be merged with a commercial project THUNDERS, which expands the capabilities of FreeNAS for enterprises and is pre-installed on storage systems released by iXsystems.

For historical reasons, FreeNAS and TrueNAS were developed, tested, and released separately, despite the large amount of common code. It took a lot of work to unify the distribution's build systems and packages to bring the projects together. In version 11.3 TrueNAS code has reached parity with FreeNAS in support of plug-ins and virtual environments, and the amount of shared code has passed the mark of 95%, which made it possible to move on to work on the final merger of projects.

In version 12.0, expected in the second half of the year, FreeNAS and TrueNAS will be merged and presented under the common name "TrueNAS Open Storage". Users will be offered two editions of TrueNAS CORE and TrueNAS Enterprise. The former will be similar to FreeNAS and will ship free of charge, while the latter will focus on delivering additional enterprise features.

The merger will speed up development and shorten the release preparation cycle to 6 months, strengthen quality control, synchronize development with FreeBSD for faster support for new hardware, simplify documentation, unify sites, simplify migration between commercial and free editions of the distribution, speed up the transition to
OpenZFS 2.0 based on ZFS on Linux.

FreeNAS is based on the FreeBSD codebase, featuring integrated ZFS support and web-based management built using the Django Python framework. FTP, NFS, Samba, AFP, rsync and iSCSI are supported to organize storage access, software RAID (0,1,5) can be used to increase storage reliability, LDAP/Active Directory support is implemented for client authorization.
