Overview of the video card market according to Steam data for March 2019

There are a number of interesting trends in the GPU market right now. NVIDIA continues to try to convince gamers that ray tracing is an innovation that they absolutely need, and therefore Turing generation graphics cards are worth the money, despite the significantly increased price compared to the Pascal generation. AMD is actively promoting its video cards in a lower price segment. A big buzz in the market was created by the release of Radeon VII with a technical process of 7 nm, as well as the announcement of the future family of video processors - Navi. How do consumers react to this?

Probably not as good as NVIDIA would like, although the company remains the dominant player in the gaming GPU market. According to Steam, the total share of NVIDIA users is about 75%, with 10% of gamers using Intel solutions, and 14,7% using AMD.

Let's take a look at how the competition between Pascal and Turing (in fact, the only competition on the market at the moment) is. The charts below compare the percentage of Steam users with GPU data and how it has changed over time since launch.

The GTX 1080 Ti had to be excluded from the comparison because the Steam data at the time of the GTX 1080 Ti's launch was significantly skewed due to the rise in Steam installations in Asian Internet Cafes and does not represent the real market picture.

Since Turing GPUs are sold at higher prices than their Pascal counterparts, a comparison of GPUs in a comparable price range has been added. So the GTX 1080 is compared to the RTX 2070, and the GTX 1070 is compared to the RTX 2060.

The gap between the GTX 1080 and RTX 2080 is slightly wider this month after narrowing slightly in the past.
