Review of the smartphone Samsung Galaxy S10 +: all this has already been in The Simpsons
I have already described my first impressions of the whole set of new Galaxy S - now it's time to talk in more detail and more specifically, directly about the main flagship of Samsung in the first half of 2019 - Galaxy S10+. Built right into the screen, a dual front camera and a fingerprint scanner, a triple rear camera with a triple optical zoom, a 6,4-inch curved OLED display, fast both wired and wireless charging, the latest Samsung Exynos 9820 Octa platform. The Koreans have created their answer to iPhone Xs Max (for the "regular" iPhone Xs, the answer was the Samsung Galaxy S10), and on Huawei Mate 20 Proand on Google Pixel 3 XL. Has the company succeeded, after the not so intelligible Galaxy S9, to confirm its ambitions as a manufacturer of luxury gadgets and demonstrate technological superiority, as it was many years before?
Key differences between the S10+ version and the “regular” S10: a larger display (6,4 inches versus 6,1), a double front camera versus a single one, a larger battery (4100 mAh versus 3400 mAh) with increased dimensions and weight, as well as the presence of a ceramic version with a storage capacity of 1 TB and RAM of 12 GB. We tested a standard glass S10+ in mother-of-pearl color (white with a blue tint - more about colors below) with 8/128 GB of memory. There will be no intermediate version with 8/512 GB in Russia.
The third version, the Samsung Galaxy S10e, looks like a reaction to the iPhone Xr - presumably with the same perspective - a simpler design, a dual rear camera, the screen is not curved. At the same time, the S10e, unlike the same Xr, only looks cheaper than the S10 / S10 +, but does not feel like that. The main advantages of the series (glass case, AMOLED display, powerful platform) are with him.
This concludes the conversation about the different S10 - then we will focus exclusively on the S10 +.
We will definitely talk about the technical originality of the Samsung Galaxy S10 + below, there are a lot of interesting and controversial points - but there is nothing to say about the originality of the external, the Koreans very consistently adhere to their style and make recognizable and at the same time unlike other smartphones. At least in the flagship segment.
The times when Samsung designers were accused of “outlining the iPhone” are long gone. On the contrary, Koreans have deliberately rejected the Apple experience for the past two years - as if out of a spirit of contradiction. The "notch" never appeared in Galaxy smartphones, and, apparently, never will again, the fashion pendulum has swung in the opposite direction from this design decision, which many so willingly and sometimes thoughtlessly seized on.
The Samsung Galaxy S10+ is still chasing bezel-less pushed to the limit, but it uses a method that the Koreans have previously tried on the Galaxy A8 and Huawei on the nova 4 and Honor View 20. We are talking about the front camera built right into the screen, or more precisely, into the corner of the screen. So that it minimally distracts from the central part of the picture and eats up a minimum of space near the status bar. The decision is also far from indisputable - let me like more “monobrows” and “droplets”. At least until you're watching video, the dual lenses in the corner of the screen aren't particularly conspicuous. But as soon as you turn on the video and stretch it to full screen in 19:9 format, the front camera immediately becomes an eyesore. Alas, while the ideal combination of framelessness with the ultimate user-friendliness does not exist - all measures look half-hearted to one degree or another: the sliders, and the removal of the display to the rear panel (so that the front camera could be completely abandoned), and cutouts, and holes in screen.
I will add that the S10 + dual camera also performs the function of an indicator - a white strip runs along its perimeter when the screen is unlocked using face recognition.
Otherwise, the body of the Galaxy S10 + retains continuity with respect to the S8 / S9 and Note9 – the display curves around the edges, resting on thin ribs made of polished metal. The back panel, made of either glass or ceramic, behaves in exactly the same way. The corners are minimally rounded, which creates the impression of a more "square" case than is usually the case with competitors. The Galaxy S10+ looks very solid in any case and - yes, you can safely use this word - beautifully. The latter, however, is already a subjective category, which in this case doubly depends on the attitude towards the front camera sticking out in the middle of the screen.
Both the front and back panels are covered with tempered glass Gorilla Glass 6 - and this is good news. It is difficult to say how the glass reacts to drops from a height (I don’t think it’s worse than Gorilla Glass 5), but it definitely doesn’t have increased sensitivity to micro-scratches, unlike the fifth version. During the two-week test, during which the Galaxy S10 + was used as the main smartphone, no “serifs” appeared either on the screen or on the back panel. At the same time, there is no case included in the kit, which is unusual - today a lot of people add transparent silicone "bumpers" to the kit of their devices.
The dimensions of the Samsung Galaxy S10+ are 157,6 × 74,1 × 7,8 mm. Weight - 175 grams. Note9 has a win in all three dimensions and in weight. A compact gadget with a 6,4-inch display will not even be called Boban Maryanovich, it is impossible for an ordinary person to use it with one hand. But the S10 + is definitely not without grace.
The colors in which the glass S10+ (and S10) are offered have mandatory names today. In Russia, the smartphone will be presented in onyx, aquamarine and mother-of-pearl colors. And here one could sneer at the tradition of calling simple complex, but the Galaxy S10 + case really has a complex color structure - it shimmers depending on the lighting. In particular, the “mother-of-pearl” S10 + presented in this review looks completely white in one light and viewing angle, and pale blue in another.
Functional elements are common to all the latest flagship Galaxy: in addition to the power and volume keys, the body also has a key to activate the proprietary Bixby assistant. At the presentation of the smartphone, it was reported that some other function can be hung on this key - in fact, this setting in the menu turned out to be inactive and, given that Bixby does not actually work in Russia today, the key remains useless. In addition, the 3,5 mm jack is preserved here - another volley in the direction of Apple. And this did not stop Samsung from once again declaring the IP68 dust and moisture protection class.
Achilles heel Samsung Galaxy S8 and, to a lesser extent, the Galaxy S9, had a rear-mounted fingerprint scanner, very ill-positioned - too easy to confuse by touch with a camera lens. As a result, the lens was permanently smudged, and the smartphone had to be wiped too often. In S10/S10+, the problem is solved in a radical way - the fingerprint scanner has moved under the screen, an ultrasonic sensor is used. We have already seen this in numerous Chinese examples - from Vivo NEX to Xiaomi Mi MIX 3. In a Samsung smartphone, one could count on a higher level of performance - all previously encountered ultrasonic sensors were characterized by low speed and an increased percentage of failures in recognition compared to classic capacitive ones. But alas, the Galaxy S10+ exhibits the same behavior. It is often necessary to rewrite the fingerprint and apply a finger for successful operation several times - not always, but too often.
Also, rumors quickly spread that the scanner, they say, noticeable when the screen is off and even gets in the way when it's on. I couldn't see anything of the sort, no matter how hard I tried. I have only one complaint about the scanner: the speed and accuracy of its operation are not high enough.
You can duplicate the scanner with a face recognition system, but the Galaxy S10 / S10 + has lost the retina scanner - there is simply nowhere to put the sensor needed for this with the new layout of the front panel. Also, of course, there is no place for an iPhone-style depth sensor or even IR illumination, as in Xiaomi Mi 8/Mi MIX 3. Only the front camera, which in low light is helped by the display flaring up to the maximum brightness. S10+ face recognition is quite fast and stable, but the method is not very reliable, I do not recommend relying on it.
