Xiaomi Redmi Note 7 smartphone review: shifting horizon

In 2018, Xiaomi impressed with the density of its announcements - in the family of smartphones of this company, which is rapidly developing after some stagnation two years ago, it is already becoming extremely difficult to figure it out. An infinite number of modifications, series, sub-series, internal competition. Even the flagship is not easy to choose - this role is claimed as Mi MIX 3And My 9. We will not try to embrace the immensity and talk about all the smartphones from the Redmi series - we need to take one of them, but it is guaranteed to be a hit (like almost any of them), symbolic and loudly declaring its claims to the throne of "the best among inexpensive". And now it's Redmi Note 7.

The latest 6,3-inch display with a waterdrop notch, the Qualcomm Snapdragon 660 platform, which is also equipped with gadgets twice as expensive, a dual camera with a 48-megapixel main module, a glass case. This is not what you expect from a smartphone for 15-18 thousand rubles, is it? But Xiaomi, with the usual wave of a discount magic wand, shifts the border of what is expected - and now everyone will have to reach for Redmi Note 7. The focus is familiar, but were there any flaws in this magical movement?

#Design, ergonomics and software

No one expects design feats from Redmi, these are smartphones not for aesthetic pleasure, but for utilitarian needs. But the usual condo approach in the case of Redmi Note 7 has given way to a look that is not without grace. If reducing the notch to a “droplet” interspersed with a lone front camera was readable (almost everyone is doing this now), then replacing the metal back panel with a glass one is a move both timely and pleasant in relation to a budget smartphone. Note 7 is that rare Redmi that is not inferior in terms of price and features (like a bright Honor 8X) neither to competitors, nor even examples of a "noble" approach, like Nokia 7.1 or Moto g7. He only lacks his own face, but today this is a problem not only for Redmi.

Moreover, this time Xiaomi did not stint on interesting colors. In addition to the boring (but solid-looking) black version, which turned out to be our test, the blue and pink Redmi Note 7 are also presented, with an iridescent case that is fashionable today, which slightly changes hue depending on the ambient light and the angle of view.

Dimensions Redmi Note 7 - 159,2 × 75,2 × 8,1 mm. Compared to Redmi Note 5 (the intermediate Redmi Note 6 flew past us like a bright but almost lifeless comet, so we will compare it with the “five”) the dimensions have not changed much (differences in millimeters, and there is both an increase and a “weight loss”) despite the fact that the screen got bigger. Thanks to the very “droplet”, due to which the status bar rose a little higher. Moreover, in this case, the damage to the latter has not been done - it is possible to display all the usual parameters, from battery percentage to network speed.

Hide this "droplet" like a large neckline in My 8 or Redmi Note 6, you can't. The manufacturer considered that it would not interfere with the user. The opinion is controversial, but it remains only to agree with him - we have no choice, it is impossible to fill the status bar with black. When watching a video in full screen, the front camera will stick out right in the middle of the picture, albeit from its left edge.

The back of Redmi Note 7, I repeat, is made of glass – probably tempered, but Xiaomi does not provide specific information on this matter. And it would be nice to be hardened - the smartphone turned out to be very slippery. And even if he doesn’t try to crawl away from any uneven surface (the back is not curved), but slip out of his hand - very much so. Welcome to the world of covers and bumpers. In the kit, by the way, there is one made of “tinted” silicone.

The set of controls is the most traditional: two keys on the right side and a fingerprint scanner on the rear panel. On-screen scanners have not yet arrived to Redmi, this is apparently a matter for next year. I won’t say that I’m very upset - capacitive sensors may not seem so advanced, but they work now much better than ultrasonic ones.

A 3,5 mm audio jack is also in place, but microUSB has finally given way to a USB Type-C port – now “micro” can be considered officially obsolete, Redmi Note here can be considered a watershed that is quite adequate to reality.

I have already said about the fingerprint scanner above - it works quickly and without failures. If you wish, you can also connect face recognition, but this is an absolute optional for those who are not very worried about security. For user identification, a lone front camera is blown away.
